Should we be trying to send weapons to Iranian protesters?
I know Obama doesn't want to get involved, but this seems like an opportunity to possibly remove the current regime. Plus they've been sending weapons to insurgents in Iraq, so we could get a little payback. What do you think?
So the consensus is that we should let the Iranian police/military slaughter the unarmed protesters? I'm not talking about sending US Marines to help them, just smuggling in a few AK-47s.
Just me here: The question in no way pertains to Bush. If you wish to answer in an intelligent manner, feel free to do so.
positively damonic: USE A LITTLE COMMON SENSE, PLEASE. OBVIOUSLY I DON"T MEAN GIVING THEM 5 AK-47S.

Yes we should try to get weapons to the demonstrators in Iran in some manner
The Mullahs and Ayatollahs and Ahamdinejad will order the Police to slaughter the demonstrators to make an example of them.
The least that we can do is provide the demonstrators with weapons so that they can defend themselves.
We provided the Afghans with shoulder fired stinger missliles back in the 1980's when they were fighting the former Soviet Union. There is no reason that we cannot provide the demonstrators with shoulder fired stinger missiles, explosives as well as your every day weapons such as AK47 rifles and ammunition.
In Addition we whould provide the Demonstrators with some long range sniper rifles, such as a number of 50 caliber sniper rifles.
A 50 caliber sniper rifle can hit and kill a target over 1 mile away. If you had the demonstrators using a number of 50 caliber sniper rifles they could create absolute havoc with that regime.
Shoulder fired stinger missiles and antitank missiles would also create havoc with the military.
I recommend that we purchase the weapons on the Internaional Arms market. there are lots of Russian and Chinese weapons out there.
If you avoid U.S. made weapons it is harder to blame us for it.
We could buy those arms and explosives and smuggle them into Iran very easily.
I agree, it is payback time.
Also one of my colleagues is originally from Iran and he still has numerous relatives in Iran. My colleague and his relatives are vehemently opposed to the Mullahs, Ayatollahs and Ahmadinejad who currently have control of Iran.
My colleage tells me that they are desperate in Iran to get some seious weapons that they can use to defend themselves, such as shoulder fired stinger
and antitank missiles. and long range 50 caliber sniper rifles..
Fortunately the border inspectors and port inspectors in Iran are very corrupt. for a small bribe you can smuggle anything into Iran, including container loads of shoulder fired stinger and antitank missiles. Not to mention explosives, sniper rifles, and AK47 rifles.

No.
We should not repeat the mistakes of the previous governments that helped a brutal dictator (Shah) to power and help another much brutal dictator (Saddam) vs Iran.
What benefits did those gave us? Absolutely nothing. In fact, it contributed to the many woes in Iran and the rest of the Muslim nations today, which was further aggravated by Bush's stupid Texas cowboy rhetorics.
The best way to deal with Iran is to let its people determine their own course. If they want to rise up by arms I am sure they could do that on their own, or if they can continue with civil disobedience to persuade its leaders and military that a peaceful turnover of government or reform is the best way for their country then much better.

There is no reason to cause a civil war in Iran. We tried that in the bay of pigs, and, nice as it would have been to remove Castro from power, it did not work.
If it can be determined that the election was fixed, action will be taken accordingly.
Don't assume that the UN will simply allow a fraudulently elected leader to stay, let alone the Iranian people.

No! No! No!
The Iranian people will have to work this out themselves.
When the US interferes, they tend to mess up.
Do what you can as a concerned citizen, but the Iranians themselves know more how to deal with it than we.
This is a hearts and minds thing.
Consider Mousavi.
He supported the regime,
then he was seen as a maverick;
maybe he will oppose it.
Others might join in.
Weapons won't help in this.

The Iranian army will crush the protesters then and blame all of the deaths on us. Hundred will die.
OH YEAH A FEW AK-47S WILL HELP. JUST ARM UP FIVE OF THE PROTESTERS THAT WILL STOP THE MURDERS. I AGREE A COUPLE OF MACHINE WIELDING PROTESTERS WILL STOP THE ENTIRE IRANIAN ARMY!

Yes make them fight each other. then take them out. look at the world map the US occupies Afghanistan and Iraq ,Iran is in the middle of the two so if if Russia or China tried helping the US is already standing between them military bases with missiles are surely ready to be used
I wish McCain quote "BOMB BOMB BOMB BOMB Bomb Iran." youtube it . but it could start a bigger conflict but these are the people that celebrate when we get attacked. SCORPIO

No, arming the protesters would make them appear as American puppets. What will come of the protests rests entirely on the Irani people.

Yes, its a start, especially since Iranians were responsible for many of the American casualties in Iraq.

No because every time America lends weapons to these people through both sides they kill each other.

LBJ made that mistake with Vietnam...
The Iranian people have stated they want to do it on their own.
