How do i connect a internal dvd writer to the computer using a usb - IDE cable?

I bought an IDE - usb cable and tried to connect an internal dvd writer. My computer doesnt seem to read it Am i missing something? The dvd writer turns on and all, the computer just doesnt recognize it.

there is power to the unit. Im using XP. DO i have to change the slave master thing? I tried it on both master and slave, it still doesnt work

    These USB to IDE cables don't always work with every type of hardware. As you found out, some don't work with DVD's.

    As has been mentioned provide us the make and form of your dvdcontinual and we can in all possibility supply you with strategies to apply it. not sure what proportion computers comprise exterior sata (eSATA) connections on the 2nd.
