2003 Harley Davidson sportster headlight upgrade?

I have a HD 2003 1200 sportster custom and work nights a lot and half my ride is in the country on back roads with curves and the shoulder consists of trees and ditches. I've had some close calls with deer and I'd like to get a brighter headlight setup but the triple tree light setup says it won't fit if I have an engine guard. Are there any options to getting a brighter single headlamp? The harley website only offers a deep bullet lamp and the triple tree chrome auxiliary lighting kit which won't fit since I have the engine guard.

What size light do you have? Bottom mount? I replaced the stock 5.75" headlight on my Savage with a 7" billet aluminum with a Bosch H4 motrocycle lamp. It was a bottom mount intended for a Harley Davidson. Got it used off eBay for $20 delivered. MUCH improved lighting.

one caveat you may want to consider,is the amperage draw of the light you choose. the Sportster charging system will have to be able to handle it. I like the Harley HID setup.Oncoming cars don't.I also have the driving lights mounted on the Engine guard, with the right one canted into the weeds a bit. This set up has saved my bacon a couple of times.I only use the driving lights in the country, my Friends tell me that they are rather annoying,if I follow them with them on.

Jason is right the only real improvement is an HiD conversion

in the UK they cost about £70.00 in USA I think they are about $50.00

THey are really worth it and the bulbs never fail so the cost of replacement and upgrade will soon pay for itself.

Edit HiD conversions have a HF unit attached and a solenoid to shift the sheild.

NOT these pretentious HiD bulbs that are on offer for a few notes.. they are xenon gas not High Intensity DISCHARGE

And dude Driving at night is the best.....

If i didn't ride at night I couldn't get to work.

also the air is denser at night and bikes/ cars run so much sweeter at night.

You can get lights for the crash bar out of the harley catalog,of if you want to save money get some accessory lights from a auto parts store. Also you can bolt a larger headlamp onto your sporty.Good luck.

there are plenty of fab shops out there that can make you something that will look amazing! If you want lights you can get it done. Riding at night is not the wisest of decisions!

Like I say, if you are going to be dumb, you mite as well be smart about it!

    Bo Jaxxer!

But in all seriousness, you should not be riding at night with a single head light.

I have H.I.D's on my gsxr 1000 and my 76 shovel, it's not a big difference it's just a different color. No matter what it is still a single bulb.

If you want to upgrade get to a shop that can weld and fabricate. It mite save your life. Plus its easy. its only a can that holds a light with a lense and making some brackets. Ive done it!

Source(s): I have done it before.

try a HID xenon upgrade. not cheap but very good. depending on the bulb you could try a 90/100w halogen bulb. try mounting the spotlights on the engine guards
