What's Average Newborn Baby Head size?

Question

I'm making a Crochet beanie for my nephew's wife who's gonna have a baby in August but I don't know how big I should make it. What's the average head size of a Newborn ? How can I figure out how big I would need to make the Beanie ? I was using a large Grapefruit as size guide. Is a Newborn's head bigger than that ? Like a small melon ?

Thank you all for your replies ! (n__n) I guess I'll just make two in different size and if one's too big she can use it when the baby get's older.

I'm not sure on the average size, but do keep in mind that they tend to stretch a little. We got one when my son was born this weekend and it fit real good at the beginning of the day, but by the end of the day it was a little big so you may want to keep that in mind when making it.

Looks like 50th percentile (average) at birth is 36cm (or about 14.25 inches) for boys, and 35 cm (13.75 inches) for girls.

I cannot remember how big my babies head was but im thinking it was bigger than a grapefruit.
