Is it right for a vet to wait to euthanize a suffering old dog?

He called the vet this morning stating we wanted him to make a farm call to euthanize our old big dog. He went down last evening, wouldn't get up this morning. 16 yrs old. I was gone to a funeral, came home right after lunch to find him still alive, & the vet wasn't coming until 3 p.m. That's 6 hours after we called. Don't vets have a creed or something to not let an animal suffer so long?

Update:

There are several vets working in this clinic. 5 vet clinics within a 20 mile radius of me.

Update 2:

Convenience for me???? I'm Gramma, too old to pick up a big dog to load in my car to take to a vet. You must think I enjoyed spending the extra money on service call!! Get real.

Update 3:

Bonzie12 you are close. My man should have stated his condition, my vet also said his vet tech should have inquired about his condition, at least asked why we wanted him euthanized.

Update 4:

Yes, I was pissed, he had one of his vets on the way before we got done speaking on the phone.

    Sorry that happened.

That's why we always took our pets to a small animal vet. Their outlook is somewhat different than a vet that deals with large animals and small. Large animal vets tend to be dealing with income producing animals and those take priority with them, plus large animals produce more income for them as well. Small animals are barely a second thought.

I'd be pissed if they have several vets at that office and couldn't get one of them out there any earlier. No excuse for that. You might consider getting a different vet if you have any other animals. Sounds as if the focus at that place might be money.

I understand about the house call, too. I just lost my 16 year old setter a few months ago. My back is very screwed up from carrying her up and down the steps, lifting her in and out of the car to go back and forth to the vet for two months. But I had no alternative.

The vet - or the vet's office - was wrong. They should have done the right thing and they didn't.

Sorry for your loss and then having to go through all that crap, too.

Vets that make farm calls generally have quite a few clients as well as 100+ miles of travel. He might not have been able to make it out in a timely fashion.

Farm vets generally work in a triage manner (at least the ones I've internshipped with). So if he got a call that a horse was bleeding to death or something of a more serious manner, you may have been bumped to the back.

Unless you told the vet that the dog was in pain and was really distressed, how would you expect the vet to know his condition? Was your dog crying or showing signs of distress or pain? If so you should have told your vet this at the time of the call. Sorry for your loss.

Gee if you were so concerned you would have loaded the dog up in the car and take him in yourself. Instead you decieded to make it conveniant for you.

Since you dog was not in dire pain and suffering, the vet had a right to prioritize his calls, you know animals that he could save by going right away.

If he's willing to come to your home to do this, he's better than about 90 percent of the vets in the country.

I'm sure he did what he could. Maybe he didn't realize you wanted it done right that minute.

It's possible he was unable to get away from his office for an on call visit any earlier ? That's the only explanation I can think of.

I imagine he'll be there as soon as he can. But if he makes farm calls, you aren't his only clients, and he has to serve you all. That includes driving between the different farms. Be reasonable.

oh my goodness my heart aches for you! well it might be hard for him to get out but i would be on your side he needed to come really soon so your dog will not suffer.
