  • Animal Welfare Acts/Laws in U.S?

Please read all the way through before posting links, I know how to use Google, and am asking here for people's opinions.

I'm doing a research paper on the Animal Welfare Act/Law of my choice. Thing is, I can't decide which one I want to research.

So, Y!A, what are some of your favorite, least favorite, ridiculous, outdated, or any law you're familiar with? I'd like to avoid the fur trade (don't want to turn in a soggy paper) as well as BSL and dog fighting (because EVERYONE is doing that).

If you guys can give me some that are off the wall ridiculous that would be great.

    Thanks!

  • What is the general opinion regarding AmStaffs/APBTs?

We had the great American Staffordshire Terrier vs. American Pitt Bull Terrier debate in class the other day.

Our breed book, put out by the AKC and published in 2005 lists the AmStaff and the APBT as the same breed.

I've read multiple times on here that the APBT is not recognized by AKC, but the AmStaff is. I've always been of the persuasion that they were, in fact, different breeds, until I was introduced to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I was confusing this breed with the AmStaff.

So, my study group would like some opinions from outsiders. Do you guys think the APBT and the AmStaff are the same breed? And if not, can you give breed differences and online references if you have them.

  • How can some people be so heartless towards Dogs?

Again, I've got a two parter for you.

A neighbor of ours decided last month that he didn't want his golden/poodle cross. He's been letting him out in the middle of the night hoping he gets picked up by the pound or run over. Why do people like this even get animals? What possesses someone to get a dog that they aren't going to want to take care of down the road?

My family in combination with the other household in the neighborhood that's as crazy as we are have been "joint fostering" him for the last couple days. Needless to say, we've become pretty attached to the big guy, but neither family can give him a permanent home.

We can support him financially, but don't have the space in our 7 dog strong home. She can provide him with ample space, but she's a cancer patient/single mom who can't support him financially.

We've got more than enough space in the back for him to romp around with the others, but the house is small and crowded enough as it is. It wouldn't be fair for the dog to come into our home with the limited space.

We've contacted a couple rescues, but he's already 2 and they have said most people are looking for pups, so his chances of being adopted in a timely fashion are slim.

I'm looking for any advice you guys have on how to handle this situation. I'd love to keep him, but it wouldn't be fair to him.

  • What's the Oddest you've seen?

This is actually a 2 parter.

From my observations, most people that own multiple dogs own the same breed or 2 breeds/mixes close to the same size.

What is the oddest combination of breeds you've seen owned by one person? Mine: 98 lbs Boxer and 6 pound Pomeranian.

This question is more for those who deal with animals other than their own (vet personell, pet sitters, etc..)

I know we all have certain habits our dogs become accustomed to or little things we do differently for our pets that no one else does.

What is the oddest request you've recieved regarding the care of a dog?

Owner: "She's leash trained, but she really hates walking, but she loves to be outside, so when you walk the other dogs, could you just carry her?"

Me: "Does she hip, joint or leg problems?"

Owner: "No, she just prefers to be carried."

  • Your experiences with BYB supporters?

I have officially lost all faith in the human race. I understand that the majority of people that own dogs are relatively ignorant to the most basic needs of their companions and even the most experienced owners have loads to learn (I know I do) but I did not realize just how blind people are or how angry they can get over the simplest thing.

I would like to know if anyone else out there has had a personal encounter with an owner of a mutt labeled as a "designer dog", what that experience was and if it was as ridiculous as mine.

I work at an airline transit kennel. We process between 50-200 dogs per day. Part of the job is to label the crate the dog is shipped in with the run number, description of dog and airway bill number to make sure the dog is returned to the proper crate. We get plenty of mutts, so most of my labels end up saying "poodle cross, lab mix, blk/white mutt" something to that effect.

I had a woman call me at work to "educate" me on her dog breed. She had a "Cockapoo" and apparently took offense to the fact that I had labeled her dog as a poodle mix. She proceeded to tell me the "history" of the breed and threatened to report me to management when I explained that she had a mutt, not a "designer dog". Her final words were "I can't believe what poorly educated children they hire for a kennel, to think you wouldn't even know the proper dog breeds.." and then hung up.

So are all people that get sucked in to this idiotic fad this stupid? Do they really believe that they have a "purebred mutt"? Or did I just get the bottom of the intelligence barrel with this woman?

  • Helping cope with the death of a Dog?

I work in an airline transit kennel, so the employees are allowed to bring their dogs to work with them.

My manager was in the process of moving and getting her new house dog ready, so her two girls, a 6 year old boxer (Daisy)and a 16 year old lab (Alex) stayed at work with us pretty much all day.

We were all very attached to the girls. They made the slow days at work bearable.

The past two weeks, Alex had been a bit sluggish. Our manager took her to the vet this morning b/c she hadn't been eating. Our coworker on shift called the rest of us in around 4 pm. Alex had had a tumor in her stomach that had ruptured. The most humane option was euthanization.

We'd never seen our manager that broken and really really want to help her through this, but have no clue what to do.

How would you help someone cope with the death of a pet? We have a ton of photos and were thinking something along the lines of an "Alex Album" but don't know if this would be more painful than good.

If anyone can give us ideas on how to help it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Questions for all of the Legit Dog Breeders out there?

I'm not looking to get into breeding, but I've always been curious as to what possesses people to want to breed. I was completely turned off the process when we fostered a litter of lab/mastiff mix pups after mama was hit by a car, way too much work for my lazy self.

    Why did you start breeding?

What breed do you specialize in?

Is it hard to give the pups up when the time comes?

How do you go about selecting decent families for the pups?

If you're a BYB, please skip this, I have no time/sympathy/anything for you guys.

  • Need some help on Horse Vaccs?

I'm completely new to horses and need to write a paper on which vaccinations are absolutely necessary for my area.

I'm in Crosby, Texas, which would be the South East region for those unfamiliar with the state.

I know I definitely need the Coggin's Test, Rabies vacc, Strangles, Tetanus, and Encephalitis.

Anything else I absolutely need or should consider getting given the environment I'm in?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Will I be safe for a drug test?

I smoked a little under half an ounce about 4 weeks ago, and I don't smoke often (obviously if I'm asking this question). I'm female, 5'8, 210 and have a piss test next week. Will I be safe for it? Or do I need to start taking preventative measures?

  • Anyone Have Relationship Advice for Me?

My boyfriend and I moved in together in September. Everything was fine up until New Years. Lately he's been really distant, and reserved around me. We used to talk about everything, now he just clams up when I walk in the room. He still acts the same around his guy friends from what I can tell.

I've tried talking to him about this and all he says is "it's stress". Understandable, but he won't tell me whats stressing him.

Even our sex life has taken a significant hit. He hasn't touched me since December, and whenever I make an offer, he says "it's not you, it's me, just not in the mood."

Am I reading too much into this? Or should I just take a back seat and let him work whatever it is out?

    Any help would be awesome.

Thanks in advance and sorry so long.

  • Any Idea what could be wrong with me?

yesterday was fine until after work. started to feel nauseous on the way home and ended up upchucking when I got home. Ruled out food poisoning b/c my boyfriend and I ate the same things all day and he was fine. Today, wasn't nauseous, but had little to no appetite and have been super lethargic.
