What is the general opinion regarding AmStaffs/APBTs?
We had the great American Staffordshire Terrier vs. American Pitt Bull Terrier debate in class the other day.
Our breed book, put out by the AKC and published in 2005 lists the AmStaff and the APBT as the same breed.
I've read multiple times on here that the APBT is not recognized by AKC, but the AmStaff is. I've always been of the persuasion that they were, in fact, different breeds, until I was introduced to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I was confusing this breed with the AmStaff.
So, my study group would like some opinions from outsiders. Do you guys think the APBT and the AmStaff are the same breed? And if not, can you give breed differences and online references if you have them.

APBT and AmStaff were the same breed (pit bulls terriers) until dogfighting was outlawed in the USA.
the people who wanted to stop fighting and just show ended up breeding the AmStaffs (they changed the name of their breed, so as not to be confused for dog fighters). the dogmen who kept fighting, etc continued to breed the APBT.
the AmStaff is a beautiful dog, but mostly bred for that- looks.
the APBT is still (by REAL dogmen) bred for strictly performance, and conformation is much looser, because the focus is the perfomance of the animal, rather than how it looks in the show ring. (i'm talking about the REAL APBT, not that hippo that the rappers own)
the staffy bull is a whole 'nother terrier.
are you confused yet?

I'm going to star for you because that will bring the bully people out.
I have an American Pit Bull Terrier. I don't know if there is a difference between an American Staffordshire Terrier or Staffordshire Terrier.
What I do know is the APBT, though not recognized by the AKC, is a different breed but where all of this gets confusing is people use APBT to call just about any Pit Bull (generic term) an APBT even though it is cross bred with Mastiffs etc and the dogs are enormous. Those are NOT the real APBT.
See if the well resourced bully people on this site can't clear it up. Because I still get confused.

They are not the same breed at all. Look on CKC website. APBT is regonized there. Different size, textures etc. Staffordshire Bull Terriers weigh 28-35 pounds so don't get wrong on that and are 14-16 inches tall. Not sure about AmStaffs, but the APBT weigh 50-60 and I'm not sure about the height, though.
