What do I need for a home theater set up with a projector?
My mom has the perfect room in her basement for a home theater with a projector and wants to set one up for my step-dad's birthday.
She has a speaker system for it, and that is already wired (though not installed.) I know we need a screen and projector.
What else will we need?

how much does she want to spend on this set up? projectors range anywhere from about 500.00 dollars to around 5000.00 dollars. the difference being ones used for computers, and ones used for home theater. either way, you would need a dvd/blu ray player if you want blu ray movies...a reciever of some sort to power your speakers.
does she want to hook up a cable/satellite box to the projector? if so, you might need one of those too.
its not hard, just kinda figure out what you want?

Here's a link to the infocus.com installation webpage which contains any number of set up scenarios:

For a quality 1080i HD DLP projector, I highly recommend the Infocus X10 which sells around $1,300 from Tigerdirect.com. You'll save some 50% because it's last year's model:

Or look at amazon.com for a used Infocus DLP SP4805 [with a built-in speaker] for around $900. Here's an actual 92" diagonal image from "A Good Woman" projected onto a goosystem.com painted wall:

Connect to the projector a standard DVD player instead of a BluRay DVD because they are priced too high at this time.
And look into www.goosystems.com for a $150.00 movie DIY paint screen offering which coordinates to your particular projector.
For calibration of the projector settings, rent any Pixar/Disney DVD [Invincibles, Toy Story] which contains the THX Optimizer and follow the set up screens for brightness, contrast.
Good luck!

We do this all the time, but outdoors. You will need an amp to hook the speakers into. The amp will be connected to a DVD player that connects to the projector. That's it. Pretty simple.
