I wil be bringing home my very first puppy in approx. 8 weeks. My question is, "Should I urinate on my puppy?

One of the many who(m) gave advice said it's so the puppy can bond with my "scent". Is this true?

Update:

WOW! Thanks to e1, I'm not going to pee on my puppy. I just wanted my friend to see his way of thinking is sooooo wrooong! Although he has done this to all of his pups (3 total).

Wow, I hope 8 weeks is going to be enough time for you to become more educated about dogs. Gets some library books and do some hefty reading. Your scent is not your urine, it is just "you" and how "you" smell to your dog. If this is for real, good luck, you'll need it.

No you should not pea on it! Let the pup sniff u ur clothing and your shoes that will do the trick! PLEASE don't pea on your dog! its just NASTY!!!!!!!! and the chemicals could possibly harm the pups skin about a week after your pup comes home he should know your scent quite well. Make sure you give your pup plenty of love and attention! have fun with your little doggy! And good LUCK!!!!!!!!

i hope my answer is helpful to you!

That's stupid. The best way to bond with him is to play with him and spend tiem with him. He'll learn your scent without having to pee on him.

Also, have him sleep on your chest so he can hear your heartbeat. I've heard that makes a closer bond, too.

Wow, I can't believe someone besides myself has heard of this ridiculous myth.

    The answer is no.

I mean, c'mon, just picture yourself peeing on a puppy. You'd never again be able to take yourself seriously.

Cuddle with it, give it one of your tshirts to sleep with, but for cryin' out loud, do not slather it with any bodily fluids.

Pee on the person(s) who gave you that advice.

Whoever told you that is either (a) telling a bad joke (b) dumb or (c) extremely misguided.

There is no need to urinate on your puppy for him to bond with you. He will learn your scent just fine if you give him a blanket that you use, it has your smell on it.

NO Hiyena's do this that i know of..

Source(s): National Geographic - Hyena's urinate on their young .. forgot the reason.

Your puppy is perfectly capable of learning your scent without your peeing on him.

Yes it's true but that doesn't mean you urinate on them. What you can do is put an old jumper down (not washed) in it's bed/crate, when it sleeps on it, he/she will pick up your scent from that

i hope your kidding, cause you ALREADY have your own unique smell to the puppy, and by spending time with it, not peeing on it. you will bond.......please dont pee on your dog.....not only because thats disgusting, you also will have to wash your pee off of it

uhhh, first time i've heard that one. if you want the puppy to bond with your smell you can wear an old shirt to bed one night and give that to him in his bed. i did that when i was crate training.
