How to clean a window AC unit?

I have two really big and nice Window AC Units. Last summer we had yellow jackets that got in both of them and we sprayed the units with insect repellent which I know is flammable. I am wondering if there is a way to open and clean them so we can reuse them? I know they get really hot but I don't know if it would be ok to use them without cleaning them out first or if that is even necessary. Please site articles if possible

There is no problem, plug them in and fire (no pun intended) the units up!

any residue should be long gone, you can use water to clean the part outside as that part gets wet when it rains
