Can't get SATA hard drive to work?
I just purchased a Western Digital 1 TB SATA Hard Drive Model #WD1001FALS and plugged it into my computer using Windows XP. It sits there like a doorstop. Checking the BIOS, as far as SATA goes, I have two choices. RAID mode or IDE mode. IDE mode locks the computer up and I have to do a CMOS clear. In RAID mode, it said I didn't have a driver, so I d/l the driver off the web site for my motherboard manufacturer and installed it. It still does not work. Looking in the Device Manager, it says: This device cannot start [Code 10]. Other than that, it tells me nothing as to what might be wrong or how to fix it. Any ideas? I hate to return the drive...it's usually some dumb little thing that's missed that causes the problems.
And before you ask...yes, the hard drive is hooked up correctly, but the computer doesn't recognize it's there.
Also, when I boot up my computer, when it scans for drives connected via SATA, it says to press TAB which takes me to some configuration screen for setting up raid. Nothing works there, however, except for pressing <ESC> to exit the screen.
Sexy...don't have Vista...don't want Vista...shouldn't installing the proper drive through the device manager accomplish the same thing as re-installing Windows? I just re-installed about a month ago and got everything working again the way I wanted.
Carling...I've already stepped through every menu in BIOS and the only mention of SATA is what I already said in my question. The computer does not recognize the drive is there at all.
Upa...again, there is only one place in BIOS where SATA is even mentioned and that's to set it as either in "RAID" mode or "IDE" mode. It locks up in IDE and doesn't do anything in RAID.
My motherboard is a Elite Group PT800CE-A. I searched for it and it basically took me right to the page to d/l the RAID drivers, but after installing, it still doesn't work.

Okay, WinXP has some issues with some SATA HDDs on some configurations. Install Vista and there shouldn't be a problem.
If Vista is not an option, then download the SATA HDD drivers onto a USB stick and reinstall XP. During the file-copying process, it asks for SCSI drivers, make sure to provide the drivers on the USB stick.

you need to step through every menu in the BIOS and find out were the setting are that tells it that you have a Sata drive installed, and on which channel Sata 1 or Sata 2, read the manual for the mother board it will tell you. if you have not got a manual then goto the motherboard manufactures customer service website and download it from there, at the same time download all the updated drivers for the motherboard,,,

On your BIOS check if the SATA HD was detected on Standard CMOS settings, you can also see other HD and Optical Drives available or installed on your CPU. If not, you might need to update it setting manually on the SATA Option, set it to Auto Detect. If it was detected on this settings, Go to Advance or other BIOS menu to Set-up Disk Priority and boot menu if you need it to be your primary disk. Btw, what was your MOBO Model and Brand...
