  • Computer went dead - possible causes?

About two weeks ago my computer suddenly just went dead and wouldn't power back on. It's older, so I figured it was either the power supply or the motherboard had died.

I replaced the power supply and it still wouldn't power back up. So I got a used (known working) motherboard and put it in. It still won't power on.

Anyone have any suggestions what to look at next as a possible cause?

  • How Do I Contact Facebook?

Someone has somehow changed the password on one of my Facebook pages so I can no longer login to it. The email address that is now listed for it is a hotmail address and I've never had one of those (it shows a partial address when you try to do a password reset).

How do I contact Facebook about this...and before you say click on the HELP link or CONTACT US link, that does no good. I can find no place on there web page where you can actually email them or contact them in any way about a problem like this.

Has anyone out there found a way to successfully contact Facebook with a problem?

  • Bad memory module? Or bad slot?

Bear with me...a lot of info below...

I have an Elite Groups PT800CE-A motherboard installed in my computer. It has two slots for memory modules and accepts up to 2gb total memory.

I have had two 1gb memory modules installed for quite some time, but yesterday I noticed the automatic memory check on bootup was only saying I had 1gb

I ran a memory test program and it registered the first memory module fine, but indicated a very reduced memory capacity for the second. So I initially assumed the 2nd module had gone bad.

I removed both memory modules and stuck the one I assumed was bad in the first slot. I was greeted with a continued beep when I tried to boot the computer up. I removed it and re-inserted the good module back in and the computer booted just fine.

I then stuck the good module in the 2nd slot by itself (nothing in the 1st slot) and tried to boot the computer. I was again greeted with a continuous beeping noise.

    So I have two questions...

    1. If you are running with only one memory module, does it have to be inserted in the first slot? Hence the beep when I tried to run it in the second slot. The motherboard manual does not indicate this one way or the other.

    2. Is it more likely the 2nd memory module is bad, or is it possible the 2nd slot has somehow gone bad? I don't have any way to test this unless I actually buy another memory module to stick in there.

  • Drive C: loses formatting...why?

I've had to re-install Windows XP about three times over the past month. One day my computer will be fine, the next it won't boot. I figured something got messed up in Windows XP so I tried to do a "repair" install only to find that the Windows XP installation reports that drive C: is not formatted or is damaged. Well, it reformats just fine and Windows re-installs on it. I did a disk scan and it comes up with no errors and I've used a virus scanner to scan for viruses...nothing...

So does anyone have any clue why the drive apparently just loses it's formatting out of the blue?

It's a Western Digital 200gb drive partitioned into drive C, D and E...never have any problems with D or E...and it's only two years old.

  • How do you set the default resolution in embedded YouTube videos?

I have a sports web page and when I embed YouTube videos on it and view them the default resolution drops down to 240p. When I actually view the video on YouTube, it defaults to 360p. How can I get the resolution to stay at 360p?

  • Billing for Virgin Mobile's Beyond Talk Plan?

I'm interested in Virgin Mobile's $25 a month Beyond Talk Plan, but I am finding confusing information on how exactly you pay for this plan. Do they send you a bill each month or at least some kind of reminder via email?. Do you just go to their web page and pay your bill each month?

I'm finding some references to paying money in advance into an account and then the monthly charge is taken out of that, but I'm not sure I like that idea.

Can someone please explain how exactly you pay for the plan and what your options are?

  • Anyone know what happened to The Graduate near Sac. State?

I don't think it's there anymore, but there used to be a restaurant/bar just the other side of the river from Sacramento State called The Graduate. I remember they had huge hamburger and fries baskets. I kind of miss the place. Does anyone know what happened to it?

  • How do I stack tables on a web page so 2nd one doesn't move?

Is there any way of stacking two different sized tables on top of each other on a web page without the second one moving down the page when I add text? I have a video contained with a table on top that is 540 pixels wide. It stays in the upper right corner. I am trying to put a smaller 210 wide table directly below it...also to the right...but when I add new text to the top of the page, it moves down the page with the text. To see what I mean, go to www.sacsports.net. The "staff box" is slowly migrating downward as I add new news items to the top. I want it to stay right below the video. I've tried every which way to do this and am out of ideas.

  • How do I get rid of non-deletable temp file?

OK, here's the situation. I did a re-install of Windows XP and the computer quit halfway through the installation. I finally got XP installed on another drive, but now there is a temporary file on the first drive it tried to install on and it won't let me delete it. In addition, Window thinks there are two installs of Windows so it gives me the multiple boot screen when I turn my computer on.

    1. How do I delete the temp file?

    2. Will deleting it get rid of the multiple boot screen? If not, how do I get rid of that.

  • How do I format my C: drive to do a clean install of Windows?

I'm trying to format my C: drive so I can do a completely clean install of Windows XP, but, of course, it won't let me because that's the boot drive. Tried booting to DOS from a floppy with the format.com program on it, but it says it won't run in DOS...tried booting with an older version of DOS with format.com on it, but then it won't recognize my C: drive (I think because it's formatted to NTSC)....HELP?

  • Shutter speed settings on Pentax K7?

I am considering getting the new Pentax K7 in a few months. I've used Pentax cameras for over 30 years and all my old lenses will work on the new camera. I read a review, however, that says the shutter speed can't be set on the K7 and I can't find any mention of this in any other articles or specifications of the camera I've read. Does anyone know if this is true? It seems kind of ridiculous to produce a camera that you couldn't set the shutter speed on...maybe a cheap one...but not one costing over $1000.

  • How do I reset or eliminate password on old computer?

I inherited a REAL old computer from my wife's office. It's a 386/33 but other than that has no identifying marks on it as to who made it or the model or anything.

When I turn it on, it does it's memory check and then asks for a password. My wife has no idea what it might be as this computer has been in a closet and hasn't been used in probably six or seven years.

How do I clear the password or reset the BIOS settings? I've tried the obvious...pulling off the little hats covering various jumper pins inside, but that doesn't seem to do any good. None of them are marked with anything identifying...other than the J #'s.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Anyone know where to get Jelly Beans?

Does anyone know a place I can order (or a national chain store) where I can get real, honest to god full-sized Jelly Beans? Not the tiny, weird flavored Jelly Belly ones.

Our grocery store used to have them in a bin where you could scoop them out, but for some reason they got rid of it and all the packaged Jelly Beans seem to have disappeared too.

I'm looking for pretty much your standard flavors - Cherry, Pineapple, Grape, Orange...don't really care for lemon, lime or licorice flavored.

  • Which Western Digital drive is faster?

I've currently got a 150GB Western Digital My Book hard drive which I am pretty happy with. I am looking to get a 1 TB drive, however, and I am wondering which is faster between these two:

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U10000N

    or

Western Digital Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000N

I can't find reference anywhere as to the speed of these drives, and various reviews of them say they're slow...but to me, slow is relative...I'm happy with the speed of my existing My Book...

Are these drives on par with it? Is one faster than the other?

Please just answer the question...I'm not looking for recommendations for other drives...it's going to be one of the two drives I mentioned above.

  • Can't get SATA hard drive to work?

I just purchased a Western Digital 1 TB SATA Hard Drive Model #WD1001FALS and plugged it into my computer using Windows XP. It sits there like a doorstop. Checking the BIOS, as far as SATA goes, I have two choices. RAID mode or IDE mode. IDE mode locks the computer up and I have to do a CMOS clear. In RAID mode, it said I didn't have a driver, so I d/l the driver off the web site for my motherboard manufacturer and installed it. It still does not work. Looking in the Device Manager, it says: This device cannot start [Code 10]. Other than that, it tells me nothing as to what might be wrong or how to fix it. Any ideas? I hate to return the drive...it's usually some dumb little thing that's missed that causes the problems.

And before you ask...yes, the hard drive is hooked up correctly, but the computer doesn't recognize it's there.

Also, when I boot up my computer, when it scans for drives connected via SATA, it says to press TAB which takes me to some configuration screen for setting up raid. Nothing works there, however, except for pressing <ESC> to exit the screen.

  • How to change default directory in Microsoft Frontpage?

When I try to open an existing file using Microsoft Frontpage, it always defaults to look in the "My Webs" folder.

How do I change it so it looks in the directory where I keep all my web page files?

This program came bundled with a Microsoft Office package I got when I bought my computer and there was absolutely no documentation with it. I've looked just about everywhere I can think of within the program and can't find a way to do it.

  • Help! Computer locked up!?

I'll try to be brief...but...I hooked up an old hard drive to my computer with the thoughts of reformatting it (it needs to be disposed of). I couldn't access the drive, however, so I hooked my drive back up and then all my computer would do is try to boot from my CD drive. Now I can't do anything with it. I reset all my bios settings to factory specs (which were basically how I had it set anyway - except for checking for a boot disk in the floppy and the CD) and now the computer won't boot at all and won't even enter setup. It does it's memory check and then basically locks up and just sits there. I checked the cable and the drive and even put them in another computer and they work fine.

Anyone got any ideas? My computer is running Windows XP.
