Drive C: loses formatting...why?
I've had to re-install Windows XP about three times over the past month. One day my computer will be fine, the next it won't boot. I figured something got messed up in Windows XP so I tried to do a "repair" install only to find that the Windows XP installation reports that drive C: is not formatted or is damaged. Well, it reformats just fine and Windows re-installs on it. I did a disk scan and it comes up with no errors and I've used a virus scanner to scan for viruses...nothing...
So does anyone have any clue why the drive apparently just loses it's formatting out of the blue?
It's a Western Digital 200gb drive partitioned into drive C, D and E...never have any problems with D or E...and it's only two years old.
GL Deathblade - Fair guess, but I don't think that's the problem. If it was worn out certainly my scans would come up with errors. And my computer is lightly used. This hard drive actually replaced another one which has been in my computer error free for about seven years. I moved it to slave and put the newer one as the master. Never can tell though...I'll continue to keep watch on it.
Jim - No, activation is definitely not the problem. I've had this Windows XP CD for years and usually do a re-install annually with no previous problems. Chkdsk has been run several times as I stated in the question. No errors are reported...the mystery continues....could something be zapping the boot sector on the disk?

Even two years old can be too old for a HDD if you use it a lot it sounds to me like it has just been worn out and you will probably have to replace it.

Second thing - Did you run a chkdsk on the hard disk to see if there really is physical damage to the computer? I would advise running chkdsk.
