Any vegan frosting recipes that are comparable to buttercream frosting?
I love buttercream frosting but recently began opening up to eating vegan and eating healthy. I love the idea of making dairy-free, gluten-free types of desserts for office get-togethers and bake sales for people who want something that tastes good and is good for them.

Vegan buttercream frosting is easy. Just sub, the butter for vegan margarine, and use soy milk. Crisco veggie shortening is vegan.
Ingredients:
* 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
* 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine softened
* 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
* 4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar (approximately 1 lb.)
* 2 tablespoons milk
In large bowl, cream shortening and butter with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep bowl covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.
For best results, keep icing bowl in refrigerator when not in use. Refrigerated in an airtight container, this icing can be stored 2 weeks. Rewhip before using.

If you are looking for chocolate frosting, this is good but very rich:

To make vanilla, just leave out the cocoa powder, and add some vanilla bean instead of extract for a more genuine flavor.

I usually just mix a cup of margarine with a large bag of powdered sugar (I wish I knew exactly how many oz it was but I forgot!!) with about a tablespoon or so of soy milk and a teaspoon of vanilla and just a pinch (like a quarty teaspoon of sea salt. Makes it really buttery and creamy and even though my ingredients are usually low-fat, you can definitely pack on the pounds after eating seconds...and thirds...and maybe fourths! Haha! If I'm feeling color-happy, I'll separate the frosting in seven portions, make two of those portions banana flavored and two of them strawberry, color each of them red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple and spread it on top of a chocolate "crownie" (accidental recipe mixing two packs of vegan brownie mix with one pack of chocolate cake mix! I thought they were all brownie! But it's really good--it rises like a cake and is moist and gooey like a brownie) and it tastes like a banana-split-brownie-cake-like-thing!
There's usually a bit of frosting left so I either save it for another cake or give it to my siblings to finish off.
