Mitsubishi Magna TR 1991 auto transmission in Fail safe mode.?

After this vehicle sat with a flat battery in an Australian car dealers yard for a few weeks the owner accepted a really silly offer. Problem is that after getting it going the silly thing only has reverse and 3rd gear.

Is this a common problem? And will it be just an ECU reset to get her going properly again?

Thanks.

Update:

I swapped out the ECU - but that turned out to be the engine unit (so much for the 'experts' - oh well). The auto tranny unit is even more inaccessible - any way got to it, unplugged it for ten minutes or so - no change. May as well not have plugged it in. Any hoo it appears mine is the three plug version, and of course the two plug unit is very available. What a painful car - it's just a Colt 1300 gearbox with an extra ratio, no wonder they spat gearboxes left right and centre!

I would try and reset the ECU first and if that doesn't do the trick unplug the TCU for a few min and plug it back in, that should cause it to reset.
