How many believe the world was created in 6 literal days?

If so how did you measure the first day? (there was no earth to rotate over 24 hours)

Update:

Rene O : If the Lord owns the cattle on a thousand hills, who owns the cattle on hill 1001? I am a christian but i think some of the bible is figurative and some literal and we have a sound mind to discerne it.

Update 2:

Nero's Shrink : I don't think you answered the question but that was an interesting point.

The facts disagree with such a conclusion:

    (1) Light from the Andromeda nebula can be seen on a clear night in the northern hemisphere. It takes about 2,000,000 years for that light to reach the earth, indicating that the universe must be at least millions of years old.

    (2) End products of radioactive decay in rocks in the earth testify that some rock formations have been undisturbed for billions of years.

Genesis 1:3-31 is not discussing the original creation of matter or of the heavenly bodies. It describes the preparation of the already existing earth for human habitation. This included creation of the basic kinds of vegetation, marine life, flying creatures, land animals, and the first human pair. All of this is said to have been done within a period of six “days.” However, the Hebrew word translated “day” has a variety of meanings, including ‘a long time; the time covering an extraordinary event.’ (Old Testament Word Studies, Grand Rapids, Mich.; 1978, W. Wilson, p. 109) The term used allows for the thought that each “day” could have been thousands of years in length.

    Definition of the word DAY

God introduced this fundamental division of time on the first “day” of the period during which he prepared the earth for mankind, when diffused light evidently penetrated the swaddling bands, thus causing the moisture-covered earth to experience its first day and night as it rotated on its axis through the light of the sun. “God brought about a division between the light and the darkness. And God began calling the light Day, but the darkness he called Night.” (Ge 1:4, 5) Here the word “Day” refers to the daylight hours in contrast with the nighttime. However, the record thereafter goes on to use the word “day” to refer to other units of time of varying length. In both the Hebrew and the Greek Scriptures, the word “day” (Heb., yohm; Gr., he·me′ra) is used in a literal and in a figurative or even symbolic sense.

If you read in Revelations it says that 1,000years equal one day in heaven. so it could of took 6,000 days to create the earth and everything in it. But, I have to say, God doesn't lie. Was the earth created in 6 earthly days or in 6 heavenly days? That should be the question. For the Bible being figurative I agree, except it will be made clear to you what is what. There is no guess work involved. If you are not sure than pray about it and soon the answer will come to you.

    Dear friend Still Thinking,

At the beginning of creation, there was none as human beings in the family of mankind into generations on the earth.

After God's third day of creation, God the Heavenly Father created the human times on God's fourth day.

Genesis 1:13-19 - And the evening and the morning were the third day. And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (Holy Bible 2 Peter 3:8)

Source(s): In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (Holy Bible 2 Corinthians 4:4)

the only time I ever use the bible is to ask questions to believers about why/how it does not make sense.

    Do i believe 6 days...no.

But I also dont believe in the god that supposedly "inspired" it...so I dont believe the validity of anything in it.

Leviticus says for man not to lay with another man...it also says not to wear a shirt of mixed fibers.

And when believers make the statement, oh, that does not apply any more, then my immediate follow up is, well why can teh perfect word of your god just completely be ignored in some cases but not others. I dont get it.

And if the response is the church says so...since when does the church know what god wants. that is very very very short sighted.

It is all bogus, clutlural laws before official governemental laws were made.

the best response I have ever gotten was...well of course god exists. he has always existed. Zeus and thor were just made up. but god is real. I nearly lost it on that one.

The funny thing about the Bible is that it's supposed to be essentially written by God, a divine work. You would think, a being as smart as God, could foresee that he might need to be clear in his words so that people could understand him easier. Also, that the Bible needed to be flexible, as things like how many cows you should get per slave, how many days the world was created, or when it's appropriate to stone your neighbor may not always be relevant.

I mean, even the writers of the US Constitution realized that any written work needs to be able to adapt to the times. Was Thomas Jefferson smarter than God?

The world was not created by an intelligent designer. It may have come into existence in six days, though... it all depends how long your days are. You can be as literal as you want, a day is relative measure of time that is not the same on every planet.

Evolution fails on many levels, both evidentially and principally. It also fails on two other levels however, philosophically and logically.

For example, evolutionists start with the assumption the universe is a closed system – that is, the universe and all that is within it, is all there happens to be, and thusly, there can be no outside interference. The problem with this assumption is that falls directly into the lap of circular reasoning. How can I be so certain the universe is all there is, without first having been outside it? Or to put it another way, how am I to know I’m in a box, if I’ve never been outside the box to begin with?

Any argument to check the validity of another argument is itself an argument that might be wrong.

Am I use to mind to test the validity of evolution? How can I do that if my mind is the very product of that which I am trying to test?

Meticulous observation? A product of my mind. Scientific enquiry? A product of my mind. Theoretical development? A product of my mind. All products of my mind, and therefore ultimately, products of evolution. To place any sort trust in them is like saying I can use evolution (that which produced my mind) to test the validity of evolution (a hypothesis I’ve developed using my mind). All my observations, my enquiries, and my theories could be wrong, I’d never know it. All my conclusions could just be me telling myself that I’ve evolved.

Logical scientific statement: I do not know whether mankind’s brain has evolved.

Circular statement: I will now use my mind to test whether my mind has evolved.

To use an analogy you might enjoy, the only way for Nero to discover he was in the Matrix, was for someone outside the Matrix to first step in. Prior to this interference, a great deal of his conclusions and thoughts about life were wrong. They were based on the assumption that his universe (the Matrix) was all there was.

All evolutionary “evidences” are invalid. They are built upon the assumption that evolution is real. Any contradictory evidence – and let’s be frank, there are many – is quietly pushed aside in favor of those things that can be twisted in order to support a circular view. All evolutionary observations, all evolutionary enquiries, and all evolutionary theories are measured against the assumption that I can use my mind to measure my mind. Face it, evolution is a failure. Using my analogy again, it’s no more than people who dwell in the Matrix, using those tools found in the Matrix, to “prove” the Matrix is all there is. It’s no wonder Chesterton wrote that for an Atheist to exist, there must first be a God; for without God, Atheism cannot exist.

Beware the agent! His goal is to keep you comfortably plugged into the Evolutionix.

The way people interpret the bible is all different.

But the way I interpret it is that, its all a metaphore, you know?

Because you HAVE to take the langauge in that time in consideration. They talked poeticly and you know how they said 40 days, and 40 nights, they used more profound language.

Those 6 days could just be symbolic, but not realistic.

This is just my opinion though, I am sure that there are many who disagree and agree with me

I do believe it. On the 7th day He rested. The 7th day has been kept since. The 7 day week has no other significance as do days, months, and years in keeping with the moon and sun. It was already mentioned there was pointed emphasis on recording there was light and dark and that was a day.

Lean not unto your own understanding says the scripture. Anything can be reasoned away if you choose to, Be thoroughly convinced in your heart.

I do. Regarding measurement of time:

Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And THE EVENING AND THE MORNING WERE THE FIRST DAY.
