Has any one tried to cut the hair of their own dog?

Are the clippers , say at Petco. for about $35.oo good enough. Or more expensive needed for pro. cut. The dog is standard poodle.

The clippers at petco are fine, but you will probably only get one or two cuts before you have to replace the blade. You can buy the professional clippers, but they are usually $150 or more. Also, a poodle is going to be a hard dog to cut yourself. You will need to use one of the guards to get the poodle cut, and my experience has been that they hang up in the thick fur. I have 3 dogs that my daughter and my self clip ourselves and we just use the blade and shave them to the skin. You need to let the blades cool from time to time so they don't burn the dog.

If your dog has never been clipped before, I would suggest getting it done at Petco or another groomer and watching what they do.

Unless you have experience in Barbering or Cosmetology -- chances are you'll either ruin the dog's coat, or make a mistake and end up shaving the dog down.

I'd say, stick with the groomer for now. Ask questions, watch them, and read some books/websites.

    Cheap clipper suck - period.

The cheap clippers aren't worth the money.

If you really want to learn how to groom your dog properly, invest in some good equipment, and some books to help you.

They are good enough if you are just seeing if this is something that you would want to do opposed to having them at the groomer.

If you know that you are going to keep doing the clipping, then you will probably want to get the better quality so that they will last for the duration.

    Good Luck.
