Instead of burning ISO images to CDs to mount the images, could I use an external hard drive?

Yes you can, make sure you have a no cd/dvd crack, and use deamon tools light, simply right click on the little icon on your task bar, find the virtual drive, and add the .mds/.iso file from your external hdd

not sure what you mean by using an external hard drive.
however, if you install a virtual drive creator like daemon tools, you can use that.
just install the program, restart when it tells you to. then use the program to mount the ISO. it will trick the computer into thinking it is a second cd/dvd drive in your computer and will treat it just like one.

its up to the containing of the cd or iso. some of the run the auto-run and start the the program directly to specific folder. this kind of CD or ISO is ok to use an ext. hard drive. some of the CD it detect drive to run the program (mostly are the game cd). for this one you have no choice but to mount it or put it on cd.
