Do you have fox tails in your yard?

Ok not totally a question more of a warning just a heads up. So I have fox tails in my backyard I'm not sure exactly what they're called but that's what we call them you know those weeds that are green then turn tan and are kind of pokey.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxtail_(diaspore)

Anyways my dog's foot has gotten really swollen last Friday so we said if it got worse we'd take her to the vet and by Sunday we noticed a little hole on her paw and it was swollen and red, we took her to the vet on Monday and on Tuesday she was scheduled for surgery : / She has 2 fox tails that embedded themselves into her skin it was a $500 vet bill but she's doing a lot better now. She has to wear a cast until next week and a plastic bag over it every time she goes outside. So just a warning if you have fox tails in your backyard

Update:

she *had* 2 fox tails that went into her paw. She a pitbull so she has short hair and we always checked all 3 dogs after comming in to make sure they didn't have fox tails on them but some how 2 got into her skin and traveled up, they where on the top of her paw so it wasn't like she stepped on it, but she does that little bull back feet thing (haha can't really explain it) after she does her buisness so that might have been it too.

I'm glad your dog is going to be ok.

We have foxtails in our area, too and right now they are all drying up, so it's the time we have to keep an eye open. They do have barbs along the shafts of the seed pod, so once the foxtail gets most of the way inside a dog's skin, it's either impossible or nearly so to remove it.

Not good! I worry about them myself.
