Best way to back up/compress my music files?

I need to back up my music files so i can restore my computer completely, I have 175 GB of music so just putting them on a disk would take a ton of disks and time, both of which i dont have. So is there any way i can compress my music files so they take up a considerably less amount of space, just so i can fix my pute then put them back on?

There's so many people like you asking about these compression wonders like "compress to less than 1% of original size" or "super compressor". There's no such thing and it's not physically possible. Go buy an external hard drive and put your songs there.

Jeeze. MP3s don't compress well... most multimedia formats don't. 175 GB? WOW.

Okay.. well if they're in AIFF format (straight from your CDs) then convert them all to 128 kbps MP3s, and you'll have about 6 GB of music instead of 75.

If they're already MP3s (if so you've gotta have probably what, 20,000 songs?) then you can try converting them all to 128 Kbps instead of whatever they're at now. If they're at 256-320 Kbps encoding rates, you'll save 50-60% size.

while you're speaking with regard to the "six strikes" gadget, that's on condition that they seize you, and that i'm particular the RIAA could nevertheless convey a lawsuit against you in the event that they had to. It on no account has been legal to get carry of copyrighted textile without the permission of the copyright holder.
