Ah! I always get made fun of for this!?

Okay, well I have an Australian accent, and my friends always make fun of me in a "playful" way about it. They know it really bugs the sh!t out of me, but whatever.

Anyhoo, I'm really insecure about it. Whenever I try to say something and it comes out weird, people always nag on me. I try talking American like too, but I can't pull it off, which causes my friends to bug me about it more.

So, I don't know what my real question is here? I guess what to do when they bug me about it and how to get rid of it?

Thanks:)

Update:

Thank you Jane*, that was sweet.

Update 2:

Oh, what I said about Jane* was sarcasm...just saying.

I love Australian accents! I think its awesome you stand out that way. You have a unique way about you in your area. Something different from the rest. Don't let it bring you down. I know the teasing hurts, but ignore it. Every time they do it, either ask then to stop, or pay zero percent to it. Keep talking like you don't hear or see their remark. If they were good friends, they'd stop, cause no real friend would want to upset another friend.

If your friends are doing this and they know it bugs you, then i think it is time to find new friends that will appreciate you. Don't let your friends bring you down. Keep your head up high and be proud of your Australian accent. I'm a girl with a heavy voice so i get made fun of that. I just put a smile on my face and let it pass. So smile and say "There isn't anything I can do about it. So you can deal with it or leave me alone." I hope this helps and good luck!

I know how you feel. I am fluent in Dutch, so when I go there, I always need a day or two to adjust to the language again, because the vowels and pronunciation are so different from the American English I normally speak and the Dutch kids make fun of me and bug me when I do speak to them in those first days.

I usually just laugh along with them, I mean, like I care. I usually have a nice comeback like "Oh yeah, I would love to hear you try my American accent then" and when they do, it usually sounds like some too fake wannabe southern accent, like in the movies, but then 10 times worse.

Be proud of your awesome Australian accent, mate!

Just let them have a go at it, they'll fail miserably, believe me. =)

Australian accents are adorable! Guys are always hotter when they speak in an Australian accent, in my opinion ;)

Anyway, don't feel insecure. I'm Dutch, and I have an accent, but what does that change? Just make fun of their accents!

If your friends moved to Australia, would they be criticized bc they have an American accent?

I really don't know, because i've never been to Australia, lol. But, I do know that your australian accent is your personal signature here in America. Be proud of it and let your friends know that you are proud of your accent and heritage.

what? you should move to my school. you'd be a god. We freakin' love australian accents. They're amazing.

really though, i'm sure none of them actually have a problem with you're accent, I bet they all love it. it's just something we do. when people from different states move to our school and talk with an accent everyone calls it out when they pronounce something different. We don't think it's a bad thing, people are just programmed to notice things different than them. they mean it in a harmless way, I promise.

Tell them that they're being beeches. and that it really bothers you when they made fun of you like that because you have no control over how you talk. Like me! I'm from New Jersey, so I say words different. (not as strongly as you do, But in my opinion, I'd rather have an Australian Accent)

You could just laugh with them. (Maybe not?

Otherwise, there's nothing you can do. Sorry, hun.

Make fun of their American accents :-) Be proud of where you are from and who you are. Find different friends who actually like it. I know lots of guys who think Australian and British accents are sexy. Just be yourself. If they are jerks, ignore them, walk away, etc.

I would love to have an accent. They're so cool. Just embrace the fact that you have one, and don't let your friends get to you. If that doesn't help, try talking to them about it. If they're true friends, they'll recognize the fact that it really is bothering you and stop.
