My dog is fearful of little kids!?
I have a 5 year old female (spayed) American Eskimo dog who is very afraid of little kids. She wasn't properly socialized with little kids when she was a puppy (since we didn't live near any when we got her). She has almost bitten kids, and will run away from them as much as she can. We are going camping with some friends (they have little kids), and our dog will be staying outside most of the time, but the little kids automatically go to her, which she doesn't like AT ALL. are there any ways to teach her that kids are ok and that they aren't bad? we would like long-term solutions, not just ones like keeping the kids away...please help!....Thanks in advance

It is never too late to socialize, it will just take longer at her age than when she was a puppy. Enlist some dog-savvy kids, and have them come over and hang out. Have them toss her really great treats (things she doesn't usually get- cooked chicken, cheese, beef, etc)when she shows interest (rather than fear). Do not force her to interact with them. Let her decide when she is ready, but also do not allow her to flee. Show her absolutely no attention when she is behaving fearfully. When she shows curiosity, offer praise in addition to the treats the kids give her. Over time, kids will become a good, positive thing that brings treats, but this isn't an overnight solution, and can take a while. You may need to keep her away from the kids on the camping trip or leave her home this time around, as the process can take months to complete.

You shouldn’t take your dog on this camping trip. It’s going to be miserable for your dog and confusing for the children. Kids naturally gravitate toward dogs. And an American Eskimo is a cute little fluff ball! The kids aren’t going to understand why you want them to leave the dog alone or why the dog doesn’t want to play with them.
Little kids make all manner of weird, loud noises and they aren’t aware of how they impact their environment. That’s why this breed isn’t usually recommended for families with small children. Find a baby-sitter for your dog, put her in a kennel or just don’t go on the trip, but please don’t subject your dog or the kids to a disaster just waiting to happen.
You can try socializing your dog with one small child slowly over several months (a few weeks will not be enough time) – but there is no guarantee that it would work anyway. Some dogs just aren’t good with small kids. It’s nobody’s fault – it’s just the way it is.

At 5 years old her fear has been her way of life for a long time. You need to make sure that she is safe from children and children safe from her. This could be a liability. Desensitization could be done, but would take a long time and would probably only desensitize her from the particular child that worked on it.
