Where should I go in the lower 48?

It turns out I have a some free time. I have been wanting to take a road trip for awhile but can't decide where to go--other than somewhere new to me, which would be most of the east and the northwest. Though, I'm not terribly interested in going much south at this time. Also, since I live near Chicago, I am looking to escape the midwest. I would like to go somewhere with good museums, aquariums or zoos ... or anything that's cool to visit and near some parks and hiking trails. Not interested in clubbing or shopping. I'm leaning towards Seattle currently but am eager for some other thoughts. Thanks!

The eastern United States are full of rich cultural and national heritages sties. You would be hard pressed to find yourself driving through the eastern states without constantly seeing signs for historic places and national/state parks. Try Boston, Washington D.C., Philadelphia.. looking for a more intimate atmosphere? You can't beat the Southern United States. With just as much to see as the upper eastern states the South is filled with a vibrant diverse culture, truly unique and unmatched elsewhere. The hospitality and down home feel is just what you should look for in a vacation. Try Charleston, Atlanta, Savannah, St. Augustine.

As a fellow Chicagoan I understand your need to escape the Midwest. It is good to get out and see America. We live in the greatest country on earth and there's no better places to go appreciate that and connect to our roots then the cradle of our nations birth, the eastern coast of the united states.
