Ozzie calls Cubs fans stupid?

According to the article below, Ozzie thinks Cubs fans are stupid and that Wrigley Field is just a bar. What are your thoughts on his comments?

First of all the city throws every team a parade when they win a championship, of course I wouldn't expect cub fans to know anything about that.

Second its not the city that keeps the cubs from playing night games, its the wrigleyville residents. And the reason they do it is because after every night game they have people peeing in their front yard.

Third every Sox fan knows there are way more people at cubs games then there are at Sox games. I would not say there are more fans, just more people. The ballpark is filled with college kids who are looking to party and know nothing about baseball. Just over the weekend I got into an arguement with a group of cub fans about baseball. I threw stats of their own team at them(they were all "die hard" fans mind you) and they had a blank stare on their face and said, "thats why we sell out every game". I said well we just beat you two out of three, and their reply was, "at least you finally sold out a game". They could argue nothing about baseball with me, next time you go to a cub game ask some random person to name the starting rotation. First I would be shocked if they knew what you were talking about but I bet they couldnt do it. But I bet they could tell you the best bar after the game. And dont get me wrong, I have been to Wrigley field for the crosstown and the Sox will never be able to compete with that neighborhood, just too much to do up there and I do enjoy going to bars but my first prority is the game, then the drink. And Ozzie actually got the quote wrong its Wrigley field is a big bar that happens to have a baseball game going on inside. But that in a nut shell is why everyone thinks cub fans are stupid. And I am not saying there arent some cub fans who know their stuff, but I would say its one in twenty, maybe. The rest are there becasue its the cool place to be.

    Funny stuff.

Especially when you consider the comment that he was replying to.

The fact that the Sox sold out when the Cubs were playing at the Cell, but only sold a little more than 20,000 seats a game when the Dodgers were in town proves a couple of things.

    1. There are more Cubs fans than White Sox fans in Chicago.

    2. That most White Sox fans fit the term "bandwagon" - they show up when the team is winning, and ignore them when they aren't.

I think it's amazing how much time Guillen and Sox GM Kenny Williams spend on worrying about the Cubs. I have never once heard Piniella or Jim Hendry say anything bad about the White Sox or their fans, or their ballpark for that matter. But hardly a week goes by without hearing Guillen or Williams complain that the media is biased towards the Cubs, or that people have forgotten that the Sox won the World Series in 2005, or that the city doesn't support them like they do the Cubs. Pretty funny from a team who has a publicly financed ballpark, who was given an enormous parade (at city expense) when they won the World Series, who has no limits on the number of night games it can play in a season. In other words, they are the team that the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago has actually helped over the last 20 years. On the other hand, the Cubs have received NO money from the state or city to upgrade Wrigley (or build a new park), had to fight for the rights to have a small number of night games each season, has had to get city approval for any little change they wish to make to their ballpark, and has had the city declare parts of their ballpark as landmarks, which limits what they can do to a piece of property that they own outright.

Guillen's rants about Cubs fans, Wrigley Field and anything related to the Cubs is based in one emoption. Guillen is nothing more than baseball's version of Jan Brady. Except that instead of moaning about "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia,", he moans about "Cubs, Cubs, Cubs." Perhaps if more of his energy (as well as that of Williams) had been spent worrying about his team, they may have actually won a couple of Series. Then maybe the fans that he says "know we suck" wouldn't have that excuse for not going to the park. And maybe they wouldn't have to depend on the team that he is so jealous of to get a sellout once in a while.

Note - I do agree that Wrigley has turned into the world's largest beer garden. And as a Cubs fan, it pisses me off greatly that the youngsters who go there just to drink, talk on their cell phones and wave to the cameras seem to far outnumber the people who are actually there to see a ballgame. Makes it a bit tough for the real fans to get a ticket. (But it also puts money in the team's pocket. Maybe the Sox should try to sell their ballpark as well as the Cubs have sold the idea of going to Wrigley. Might just help you buy a few ballplayers)

That's Ozzie being Ozzie. He doesn't care what people think about him and he'll say whatever he wants. He is entitled to that, but I think he will have some serious repercussions next time he has to go into the (at that point) not-so-friendly confines of Wrigley. We'll have to wait and see.

Cubs fans aren't stupid, but I'd believe it 100% that he said that.

That Ozzie is one bright fella. I mean, come on, after 100 years of failure, their fans still spend all off-season telling anyone who will listen that "this is the year". Idiots.
