help with PC data transfer?

I have the following:

One dead laptop which won't turn on or run off battery power.

One shiny new laptop which has nothing on it.

One networking cable purchased from PC world.

I need to transfer all my files from said dead laptop to the shiny new laptop (most importantly my itunes library, but also lots of word documents, photos etc.) I really don't want to pay £60 for hard drive recovery at PC world! I don't know if they've sold me the right thing, if someone could give me very simplified instructions on how to drag the data from one laptop to the other I would be very, very grateful!

Thanks =]

    I will suggest a simple solution but it will require some technical know how. Remove the hard drive from your old dead laptop and put it in an external USB hard drive case (case will cost somewhere around $3 to $5).

    You will be able to access your old hard disk as an external HDD using the USB port (and a cable which should come with the case) with all data inside and you don't even need to do a data transfer from old to new HDD..... How is that for fun !!!!

    Take the networking cable back and get a refund.

    Get an external hard drive case (approx. $40 U.S.) that will hold a laptop hard drive (make sure of what kind of hard drive the old one has in it - worst case, remove it and take it with you).

    Stick the old hard drive in the external hard drive case, plug it into the USB port on the new computer and copy the files onto it.

    Then you can use the old drive as a backup.

    Take the hard drive out from the dead laptop and buy some external hard drive enclosures. They run for 30-40CAD, but make sure you buy one for laptop hard drives (they are smaller). You put your hard drive in it, and plug it to your new laptop and you're saved. Plus you have an external hard drive...
