What is the difference between DVD+RW and DVD-RW?

What is the difference between DVD+RW and DVD-RW? I don't need to know the history and stuff like that, I just need to know the pros and cons between the two.

What would be better for creating hard drive backups and copying files to DVDs? What about CDs, is there different types of disks for those too? If yes, what's the difference there - they would be used for the same uses as listed above and audio CDs?

There are two camps, the "dash" standard of the DVD Forum, and the "plus" standard of the DVD Alliance, the plus being later, in response to disagreement over licensing.

Each of those has write once (DVD-R/DVD+R) and rewrite (DVD-RW/DVD+RW) media.

For most uses in a PC based drive, it doesn't matter, what makes more difference is the media that the drive is best with, to take one example, Pioneer drives tended to be more reliable in DVD-R and Liteon with +R, but those differences have generally been smoothed out in later drives.

DVD-R is generally a better bet for playing in DVD players.

CD just has CD-R (write once) and CD-RW (rewrite). If a player does not say it handles CD-RW, then it generally won't.

"Audio CD" is special media digitally marked as "recording tax paid" for use in consumer audio recorders, it is not required for computer drives, even when recording audio.

The short answer is: for backup and any other use on YOUR computer, you can use any of those. It makes no difference.

If you want to create disks, which can be used on other computers and/or on regular DVD players, you should use DVD-R (or DVD-RW) because not all the players can play DVD+ disks.

In other words, if you create a "plus" disk on your DVD Plus writer, you can use with no problem, but if you give it to a friend you might have a problem. On the other hand, DVD "minus" disks can be played on almost all players.

    DVD +/- RW

The “R” stands for recordable, while the “W” stands for rewriteable.

Both - and + disks are same, these are the standards of manufactures.

The DVD-R/RW standard was developed by Apple and Pioneer.

The DVD+R/RW format is supported by Philips, Dell, Sony, HP, and Microsoft.

    You can use any disks. However, if you wish to take the backup and transfer multiple times, DVD +RW disks are better, because, we can erase if we if and burn once again freshley.;

dvd+rw means you can write on a disk and continue writting if there is space

dvd-rw means you can write but you can add

for example if you have a dvd+rw you can write 1gb on a dvd and still be able to write 3 more gb

if you have a dvd-rw it means you can write 1gb on a dvd ...and thats it you would waste 3gb

    so get a DVD+RW

DVD+RW means you can put stuff on it, and then delecte or overwrite it with new stuff, like an old recordable vhs tape, with DVD-RW you cant, so once somethings on there, you cant delete or overwrite it.

As for storing files, User a CD+R Thats perfect for what you want.
