My dog has bruises from chewing himself and I'm not sure what to do?

My Husband left for his deployment last month, and since then my dog has started chewing his back and groin area. Now he has bruises where he's been chewing himself. He's on a regular flea treatment and gets baths once a week using a moisturizing dog shampoo. We also go for regular walks to the local dog park every morning so he can play with other dogs(he's very social), plus he has the backyard at his disposal. Now I've tried contacting his Vet but she won't be able to get back to me til tomorrow or as late as monday. Any suggestions beyond putting a cone around his neck would be appreciated, I don't want him to feel like he's being punished for missing my Husband.

The weekly bathing could be part of the problem . Dogs have naturally dry skin and bathing, even with moisturizers, every week is too often. 3 weeks between baths is pushing it. A lot of the problem could be attributed to the hot sticky weather. The Dog could also have skin allergies not related to fleas. And could possibly be picking up something from the dogs he is socializing with. You know what you've done for your dog but do you know what kind of care the others are getting? Try giving 25 mg of benadryl twice a day and putting some anti-itch cream on the raw areas, then as soon as the vet is available, take the dog to see him. Good luck. I feel helpless, too when my dogs get that way.

I wouldnt wash him that much, it could be irritating his skin. My dogs the same way. He has very sensitive skin.
