How does consciousness relate to Kundalini?

Is Kundalini the pathway of consciousness? Is it the spiritual energy of consciousness?

Update:

And in your words what did Krishna mean when he stated Kundalini is "the guardian of human evolution," and, "the most jealously guarded secret in history."

Update 2:

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who has answered! Second, I took that quote from the first answerer's website she supplied at the bottom:

Update 3:

I do not give thumbs down!

Kundalini itself is the consciousness....as long as it sleeps in base chakra she works as ego and knows itself as this body/mind

and on awakening and reaching eye chakra, she realises, her real self.... of Ardhanariswara (half shiva - half shakti).

Where did Krishna say that ??

however Kundalini is the guardian of evolution....as evolution of body mind system is actually result of evolution of Kundalini...from ego to EGO of supreme.

Kundalini has been and is kept as secret, as any experiment with her without proper guru/guidance, may lead to disaster

I do not know so much as the others but it has been my understanding that Kundalini is one of 7 energy (centers) in the body, located in the lower spine at tail. It is sensual in nature. So it can be said to be a 'flavor' or facet of counsciousness.

But it is really not consciousness any more than the reptile part of your back brain is. That reptile part of the brain affects consciousness but it is primitive, of the body. Consciousness is awareness, a "higher level of" is being more awake.

What does being more awake mean? The best way to explain, if you really want to know, is to perform an experiment. Go to

    http://www.fhu.com/meditation.html [it's free]

click the "play now" arrow and sit quietly for 5 minutes being aware of the present moment. You will immediately realize how little time you spend in real time every day. Hardly any. Mostly you are lost in your head. This is the light hypnotic state us humans inherit, so we think it is normal. "Waking up" or raising your level of consciousness is simply learning to observe the noise generator which is your brain objectively, as though from a little distance, while being aware of the present moment. The exercise is an anti-hypnosis, designed to wake you up.

So, you can devote yourself to shaking your booty or on having the A-HA! experience of new realizations as you wake up from the dream state we accept as normal.

Because 9 out of 10 Sages agree that Truth is found in the present moment. It is omnipresent.

Kundalini is a psycho-spiritual energy, the energy of the consciousness, which is thought to reside within the sleeping body, and is aroused either through spiritual discipline or spontaneously to bring new states of consciousness, including mystical illumination. Kundalini is Sanskrit for "snake" or "serpent power," so-called because it is believed to lie like a serpent in the root chakra at the base of the spine. In Tantra Yoga kundalini is an aspect of Shakti, the divine female energy and consort of Shiva.

The power of kundalini is said to be enormous. Those having experienced it claim it to be indescribable. The phenomena associated with it varies from bizarre physical sensations and movements, pain, clairaudience, visions, brilliant lights, superlucidity, psychical powers, ecstasy, bliss, and transcendence of self. Kundalini has been described as liquid fire and liquid light.

Indian yoga, with its emphasis on the transmutation of energy to higher consciousness, was the chief contributor to the cultivation of kundalini and the preservation of its knowledge prior to present times. Kundalini as such was a rarity in the West before the 1970s until more attention became centered upon the consciousness. In 1932, for example, psychiatrist Carl G. Jung and others observed that the kundalini experience was seldom seen in the West.

That's not to say that the West didn't have its own mystical and ecstatic experiences, just not kundalini.

    Hope this helps

I took the time to read up on it and here is my opinion. ... It seems to be a department of spiritual energy and it has to do with Desire. Since I believe everyone has a spirit, or soul, so kundalini, to me is just one part of the soul personality. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Kundalini (kuṇḍalinī, Sanskrit: कुण्डलिनी, Thai: กุณฺฑลินี) literally means coiled. In yoga, a "corporeal energy" or "coiled power" - an unconscious, instinctive or libidinal force or Shakti, lies coiled at the base of the spine.[1][2][3][4][5] It is envisioned either as a goddess or else as a sleeping serpent, hence a number of English renderings of the term such as 'serpent power'. The kundalini resides in the sacrum bone in three and a half coils and has been described as a residual power of pure desire.[6] The concept can be found under different names. For example the eighth century Tantrasadbhava Tantra and uses the term kundali ('she who is ring-shaped').[7] The lower location of this force can vary slightly, from the rectum to the navel.[8]

In real terms there is no relation. However to attain or to come close to power to control Kundalini shakti, consciousness is a must.

Kundalini/"serpent power" is the primordial energy coiled in the base of the vertebral column(muladhara chakra), rises in different stages through different centers of the middle of the body to the brain region and as it rises level of consciousness also rises from unconsciousness to consciousness, to collective consciousness, to super-consciousness, to universal consciousness, to cosmic consciousness and finally when the energy rises to sahsrara chakra in the brain region, we gain God consciousness. Yogic Practices aid this process.

Yes. Verily said OM. The Ardhanarishwara the male female principle is behind all creations and creative powers. There is a beautiful nerration of it in one of the experiences of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa where he was found walking to and fro as Shiva and Shakthi. Understanding of this principle give rise to philosophy of Creation. A lesser understanding give the rise to the philosophy of evolution. A much higher understanding above both these which is more than understanding a Consciousness give rise to the Higher Consciousness (here I cannot use the word understanding) of differentiation and undifferentiation of Brahman.

The pathway to the higher cosmic consciousness which is undifferentiated Brahman is four fold. Gyana Yoga, Bhakthi Yoga, Karma Yoga and Raja Yoga. Raja Yoga is a gradual, scientific, proof oriented rational approach where step by step methods are prescribed for right conduct, right asanas, right cleansing of the body from inside and outside including the nadis and chakras to pave way for the body and its contents to transform into pure consciousness. The preparation of the body for this task can be achieved by practice of Ashtanga Yoga. The prescribed method here in this context (as there are other methods also), is the awakening of kundalini. The Conjoining of Shiva and Shakthi is considered the consummation to awakening Kundalini. Shakthi is the primordial power, beyond Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara and is the purest form of energy which is defined as pure consciousness, the Mahat. It is said, "In the beginning, Shakthi and Sada Shiva existed and when the time of creation came Shiva and Shakthi took to the cover of Maya the illussion resulting in the formation of :

    Tri-Murthis - Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara.

Three worlds - Bhur Bhuva & Svah

Trigunas - Tamo Rajo & Satwa

Sapta Loka - Seven Upper worlds

Sapta Sura - Seven Syllables of Music etc.

Just as this happened in the macrocosmos, the Sakthi in the body too took cover of illussion and relegated in the form of sleeping power of 2and 1/2 coiled serpant with face towards the opening of the Mooladhara Chakra.

The position of Shiva and Shakthi in the body is upside down. The imageries to this effect can be seen in many of the esoteric carvings in ancient cave temples in India. There are many instances in the Soundarya Lahiri where Adi Shankaracharya has explicitly alluded to the leg of the Shakthi kicking the head of Shiva. The Shakthi dwells at the Mooladhara Chakra and Sada Shiva at the the Sahasrara Chakra. There are prescribed methods to awaken the kundalini which takes its natural form of the energy behind the pure consciousness. The energy and the consciousness are inseprable and therefore the version the priomordial energy is pure consciousness is absolutely right. The molten golden fire of shakthi is said to create more than 5000 degree of heat which do not consume the body which covers it. The fire here takes a devine form, whereby it was called Agni Deva and not just fire. Agni Deva is fire that can consume a world but will not consume what it does not intend to consume. Therefore the body is not burnt of when the fire of that magnitude passes through the Shushunmna Nadi (spinal code-a materialistic terminology). Each Chakra has to be penetrated inside the body starting from Mooladhara(4) Swadhistana(6), Manipura(10), Anahata(12), Vishudhi(16), Anjana(Agya)(2), & Sahasrara Chakra. Sahasra chakra is like an inverted 1000 petalled lotus. The sound produced from the 50 petals as above is the communication that all human beings are capable of and that is the boundary to Nadabrahma as long as he stays in the material plane of consciousness. The moment he aspires for the higher planes and awakening of the kundalini, the scope of access to Nadabrahma is of thousand petalled lotus. One can imagine the amount of sounds the human beings can produce and comprehend with 50 petals and the scope from that of 1000 petals. Similarly each power of the human beings are multiplied in a chain reaction by the 1000 petals when it joins with Shakthi which brakes and penetrates all the chakras to reach the sahasrara chakra. The tip of the serpent like shakthi is triangular and increasing with each further attachments in trangular shape. Therefore, once the kundalini is awakened and start working upwards, the heat and the ambience should be maintained lest the sushunma relapse to its original form where, the kundalini will get trapped on way and will be disastrous. The other known danger is that it goes up after Anahata and Anjana Chakra with tremendous force that it can rip open the cranium if not done in a controlled environment. A guru therefore, is a must when attempting Kundalini.

Consciousness and Kundalini are one. The joining of shiva and shakthi is an imagery of Macrocosm inside the Microcosm. The creation or evolution or differentiation of the universe inside a human body. Just like you can make a life threatening powerful electricity from a small piece of magnet and few coils of wires, you can create a world of energy and pure consciousness from a kundalini with a few wires bound over it like Sushunmna, Ida and Pingal and other 78000 or 3,84,000 Nadis or nerve fibres. Sahasrara Chakra does not lie inside the body. It is above the head, it lies in the auric body or energy body which is covered in the shape of the body over our physical visible body. Human body is not confined to what our eyes tells us. Eyes are imperfect and meant only to conduct us in the way we are conducting this universe as of now, if not it could create so much complications that it would become impossible to live. The example of such complication is a "Mad Man" who hears different types of sounds which we do not hear, he see different kinds of things which we do not see, and for whom the true nature of Ether is lost and the fury of air in the ether breaks the continuity of etherial thoughts as jumbled thoughts and therefore his physical behaviours as mad man complemented by the mental behaviours he accrue through the jubled broken, cacophonic-etheric- thoughts.

To simplify everything for you, Shakthi is the negative current, Shiva is the positive current and their conjoining, the light or the energy or the power which is produced is the Consciousness just like the circuit completion in a positive and negative current gives light and energy. Put a green betal into your mouth and a white Chuna (Calcium) the resultant red colour is a creation, which has properties of both but visually, audibly, sensually, sensibly, cognizably different from the original raw materials. That is materialistic way of explaining where as Kundalini is a transcendental aspect conceived and cognized spiritually.

And last of all a word to the scientists. The Kundalini also means that the power responsible for the differentiation of the universe into what it is now is dormant now like the Kundalini is dormant inside human body(though human beings are alive as consciousness and walking the surface of the earth), and that the dormant Cosmic Kundalini can be awakened again if power of human beings are above that of God or that consciousness and prevail over the whole of universe to control them and awaken them, just the same way as the dormant kundalini can be awakened inside human body. However, the result would be the same experience as what happens when a kundalini is awakened inside the body. There would be natural calamties of unbelievable nature all over the cosmos which will settle as inexpressible BLISS AND LIFE BRIMMING LIFE EVERYWHERE WITH ALL KINDS OF POWERS EVIDENT WHICH IS NEVER BEFORE KNOWN TO HUMAN KIND.

Never heard Shri Krishna say that.
