Do you think this is stupid?

Getting rid of a succesfull (led leage in attendence for all 17 years and led all minor leagues a few times) "AA" team for a small chance of getting a "AAA" team in a year or more and having at least a whole year with no hockey?

The Blazers are looking to join the bigger, better circuit and are willing to sacrifice the season to get it done. Aside from all the behind-the-scenes logistics that we rarely hear about in franchise shifts, I don't know why that is the way they are going but it may be a necessary evil in order to reach the larger goal.

As mentioned in the article, there is a dormant franchise floating around for several years now that hasn't earned any revenue. Its like buying a brand new truck for yourself and never driving it. As a business venture, the dormant team has earning power thats just sitting there doing nothing.

I haven't seen any CHL action, and have nothing against the league. Perhaps the Blazer owners see a move to the AHL as beneficial to them and feel that shutting down for a season and building from scratch is all worth the effort.

However, from your standpoint, losing a year of games would be hard to accept. But I'd be optimistic about the decision.

We had a team here in Philly back in the 70's called the Firebirds in the NAHL. After their championship season, the team moved on to the AHL because the NAHL closed down. I went to games in both leagues and believe me, there really wasn't a noticeable difference because the leagues were relative to their own level of talent.

It's more than a small chance. The city has been in talks with the Oilers about the AHL team, and by most accounts, it sounds like a deal is in the process of being worked out.

I'm sad to see the Blazers get kicked out like that though. I don't know if the same people still run the organization, but when I was in contact with them about 8 years ago, everybody in that organization seemed to just be good people.

Still, I'd absolutely take the chance on this if I were Oklahoma City. The CHL is filled with nothing but former college/juniors stars who will never make it to the big show and older guys who played three games in the NHL a decade ago. Meanwhile, the AHL is half-full of the stars of tomorrow and the best of the rest in North American hockey. If you can trade up like that, it's a no-brainer to me that you do it.
