Silver residue in dishwasher?

We have a kitchen aid dishwasher and everytime we wash dishes now it leaves a fine siver powdery residue on the dishes. We are not doing anything different. and we are not wasing any real silverware. What is going on ? We have had it now for 6 years with no problems until now.

    It could be hard water spots like she said above, and it could also be something that the pipes are made out of that is shedding into the dishwasher.

    Vinegar in the wash will help with the hard water spots--check my sources, I've put a link there with how to take care of that. If you try the vinegar and nothing changes, it might be worth a phone call to the plumber because it it's a hard metal from the pipes, it could be toxic.

    It needs cleaning. Jet Dry sells a product for cleaning the dishwasher. You place the bottle in the empty dishwasher and turn it on. You have calcium buildup

    it's the hard water, try jet dry it will help.

    if your racks are silver lined they are shedding, you should have a soft water unit. it will help keep your appliances life and it's great on the skin too.
