How much is tax in Illinois if I purchase $7.99 item?

    The sales tax is 6.25%. Add that(.50) to your $7.99 and your total is $8.49.

    It varies depending upon type of item and by city and county (home rule sales tax). My city overlaps Kane and Cook county, so sales tax differs within my city.

    Depends. . . .is it food, medicine, sundries?

    . . . are you in Cook County, Du Page, McHenry, or. . . . .?

    Ms. Flow is wrong as Cook County tax is MUCH higher than 6%. She was only considering the state tax without regard for the county and community taxes. I pay for Cook County and Oak Park as well as state.
