How do I create attic storage?
We have been living in our new home for two months and I went to the attic for the first time thinking it would be an open area and only needed to put down some plywood. Unfortunately, there are wooden beams crisscrossing the entire attic. Are these supporting the roof and how can I get rid of them to create space?

You have a trussed roof. The thickness of the lumber is substituted with the diagonals and verticals. You can not cut these out, the roof will collaps.
You will be required to have a engineered design, Which most likely will be very labor and material extensive, for altering this roof.
Some homeowners place a wood floor in between the webbing for what little bit they can get.

The right answer is you cannot. They are an integral part of the roof. Perhaps you should consider a storage closet in the garage.

leave these struts well alone ..do not remove ..these take tension off the rafters which support the weight of your tiles ..if removed roof will sag or even collapse ..please see a local builder or a structual engineer first.. he will probably give free advice..
