"Ironic" lyrics by Alanis Morissette?

Every time I listen to that song I'm confused...

In the part where she's talking about the guy who is too afraid to fly but then flies for the first time and crashes...there's a line that says "And as the plan crashed out, he thought, 'well isn't this nice?'"

Is he being sarcastic when he thinks "well isn't this nice" (like, oh great, this is my first flight and it's crashing) OR does it mean that since it's his first flight he doesn't know what a plane ride is supposed to be like and he thinks it actually is nice??

What do you think Alanis meant?

he waited his whole life to take a flight because he was scared.

shes saying its ironic because the time he actually decides to give up his fear, something bad happened.

Well the song as it states is about irony throughout life, so in that lyric she says that the man waited his whole life to take a flight, but then it starts to crash which is the irony. So saying "well isn't this nice" is a sarcasm that contributes to the song's meaning of irony.

  • I think what she is telling people is that it's ironic he would think that way when it's his first plane ridge. Just like she says in the song.."its like rain on your wedding day...it's a free ride when your already late...it's good advice that you just didn't take and who would have thought...it figures." I think she is just saying that it's ironic at times how life is.

When that song came out, she got a lot of flak for misusing the term "ironic". What she was singing about was a bunch of unfortunate events that weren't the least bit ironic.

It is sarcasm. His whole life he was so afraid to go on a plane, and when he finally does, it crashes. It's irony, I highly doubt that she means that he thought it was normal.

irony is a form of sarcasm. even though her lyrics are mainly coincidental or just inconvenient, the sarcastic remarks technically portray irony. having 10000 spoons when all you need is a knife isnt ironic.... its unfortunate.
