Through competitions, Athletes get given huge endorsements (e.g Nike with Federer) Athletes if they win and are sucessful gain huge amounts of prize money. Which sadly with a drive for sucess, a few athletes turn to anabolic steroids. e.g (tour de france) :). So with a gold medal olympian, what they earn depends on their endorsements and what sport they play :)

The USOC has paid prize money to its winning Olympians since 1984, this year giving out $25,000 to gold medal winners, $15,000 to those who take home a silver and $10,000 for a bronze

They do not get paid at all. Granted, the country's Olympic Committee will help with travel arrangements and such. But the athletes do not get paid at all. They participate to be called the best in their sport for a couple of years. Now, if they do well enough over several olympics, they can get endorsement deals.
