Is rock actually confirmed dead now?

Ok, so, rock music has always been more about feeling and expression than real lyricism but you can't deny that good bands with staying power influence further generations of great musicians. Makes you wonder why there's 4 Nickelback songs on the radio, in heavy rotation. They represent what it now means to be an American in the same way Transformers 2 does and they're not even from here. Being a rockstar now means to wear denim and cry with an acoustic guitar about your wife/god/the troops/PAIN and how you are "breaking down" or will "break" soon. Turn on the radio and listen for an hour and you'll see what I mean. Honestly, is there any hope that artists still have a chance to make real music?

Update:

Depending on where you are, the local bands are worse. For those that think radio's my only source, I'm sorry for you guys. Does insulting me make you feel like your point carries any more weight? I'm only asking because I want to see who's also angry at this trend that music, art, film, etc is just getting worse with no end in sight. I can't be the only one who believes this, can I?

Mainstream rock completely sucks and yes, most everything on the radio is terrible. Yes it's disappointing to see these low life talentless bands rack up the money and fans, but many good bands don't sell out to obtain that mainstream sound and money. The music taste of the public is terrible because they've been trained to like whatever is on the radio.

There are still tons of good bands. Here are just a few.

Sonic Youth. Dinosaur Jr. Animal Collective. Wilco. TV On the Radio. The Dirty Projectors. Grizzly Bear.

These aren't all what you would consider mainstream rock or even rock at all depending on who you are but nevertheless these are all great bands. There are so many more to list but Im too busy listening to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot to list anymore.

That response by One Cool Cucumber is ridiculous, Green Day?! honestly? Maybe prior to American Idiot before they sold out to the goth scene. And Linkin Park is a terrible nu-metal attempt at rock.

That's my opinion of it all. If you want some older stuff to listen to check out The Velvet Underground, Love, Neutral Milk Hotel, Interpol, The Vaselines, Pavement

Rock is always changing, I'd personally be bored with it if it wasn't. Just as people don't always like bands' sophomore albums, many don't like modern rock. Sometimes it is because they don't search any farther than radio stations and Target's music section before determining that. You say that you have more experience with rock than that, so I'll have to take your word for it. But I want you to consider all types of modern rock music. Sure, you might not like all the subgenres but are there maybe one or two that you enjoy/tolerate?

Musicians/critics often claim a band has some sort of uniqueness, and often in the same sentence cite the music's influences. Rock comes from older rock and sometimes it does get boring if you can play 'I Spy' with its influences. But don't be bitter at today's artists because they don't have quite as many guitar solos or quite as much hairspray. Sometimes evolution has its perks.

Sidenote: Lots of times people use the word "radio" when they are referring to all mainstream music, so consider that when people insult "the radio."

My opinion on this is that something can't die if it's always changing and always being fueled. So, for your original question, no. Rock can't be confirmed dead until people have halted their listening and people have stopped forming sub genres under the label of rock.

I do understand your point about how rock music has become slightly similar, minus a few songs.

So no, you're not the only one. Local bands can be just as bad, good or in the middle, compared to the more famous bands.

If you like, I can compile a list of bands that are out of that cycle so far.

HannahTheSweetBear, you are SO wrong about pop being better. It's also insulting because they only do their music for money, PLUS I am a rock band drummer.

Look, it will have a decline, but don't worry. Some bands are still out there fighting for rock to stay alive. And eventually, rock will be the big thing again. Just be patient. And I agree, Nickelback is what they consider that (very sad), considering their only rock song is "How You Remind Me". Another notable thing that they call rock which is really crap is The Fray. They suck. Bad.

But you know what? Listen to the Offspring. Especially Hammerhead. Listen to Rise Against and Linkin Park. Listen to Green Day. Support our only hopes to keep the decline to last too much longer.

So, no, it is not confirmed dead now, but is resting. It will rise again. For now, just support the bands we have now.

Radio isn't really the place to look for quality Rock music. So, I wouldn't really considered 'dead' at this point. There's plenty of bands out there, it just a matter of sifting through all the mainstream stuff (ie. Nickelback, Paramore, etc, etc) and finding something that really appeals to your musical tastes.

yes i agree with you. mainstreem rock sucks. but hasn't the point of rock always been to go against the mainstreem and what's playing on the radio? there's so many other, better, bands out there that are doing what rock music is supposed to be. they're just under the radar. so i'd say no, rock is not dead.

Rock isn't dead, the good stuff just isn't on the radio, and it's not "popular" rock. I recommend checking out the bands that perform on KCRW "Morning Becomes Eclectic", and check out the bands that play the summer festivals, not just the headliners.
