What is the best way to extend wifi range?

There are two houses on the property I live on. One of them has a Linksys WRT54G router, but its broadcasting range isn't far enough to reach the second house. The wifi signal is very poor and unreliable that far out. It needs to reach over 50 yards, and there is no building between the two that I can put an indoor antenna in.

So I need to know, is it worth shelling out the money for an outdoor antenna? Or is there a better router that has a wide enough range to reach over 50 yards with a better than fair signal?

Update:

The parabolic antenna will not work as I still need the router to broadcast throughout the first house! And that specific kind of antenna gathers the signal into a beam rather than allowing it to broadcast in all directions.

You could get a repeater but you could also build a cheap wifi antenna if you can solder. Tons of hints and assembly instructions on how to build a wifi dish out of an old primestar dish, a chunk of 12 gauge solid house wiring, and a piece of coax with a connector on the end. I've built many different designs for chump change and my latest has a 1/4 mile range.

You dont put the antenna on the router, you connect it to the pc you are trying to connect to the router with.

Dont count out the latest weatherproof solar powered repeaters either.

You have not specified where you are using the wifi and for what purpose. The range of wifi signals is of 50mtrs and if you need to amplify / increase the range then put higher dbi antenna to the router but all it will work in open space. There are other solutions also but you should provide the details of connectivity required for.

The D-Link DWL-800AP+ is an 802.11b Wi-Fi access point with a special trick up its sleeve. D-Link actually bills this device as a "Wireless Range Extender," since its primary function is to relay Wi-Fi signals to a main access point somewhere else in the wireless network.

Imagine that you have an access point on the second floor of your house, but the Wi-Fi signal doesn't make it down to the basement. You could place the DWL-800AP+ on the first floor (all it needs is a power outlet) and it would rebroadcast the signal from the main access point on down to the basement (plus, the first floor would then be doubly covered). Make sense?

Setting up the DWL-800AP+ was mostly painless. The only thing tough to figure out was telling the repeater the right MAC address (my main access point has three -- Ethernet, WAN, and wireless) to re-broadcast. If you guessed "Ethernet," congratulations, you win.

Be warned, however: the DWL-800AP+ doesn't work with all access points. Make sure you check the D-Link FAQs for a list of supported access points. The one I'm using with it is the D-Link DI-614+ Wireless Router, and it seems to work just great. Plus, since both of these devices are compatible with D-Link's proprietary AirPlus standard which promises speeds up to 22 Mmps (100% faster than 802.11b's standard 11 Mbps). As always, YMMV.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the improvement. My back deck now has 100% Wi-Fi coverage, which means that sitting out back and sipping a tall cool drink while browsing the web (or updating GearBits) can't be too far off. Now all I need to figure out is how to hook up my grill to the WLAN...hmm...

    It sounds like a directional outdoor antenna may assist you, or you could upgrade to 802.11n -- see below from Wikipedia;

Wi-Fi performance decreases roughly quadratically as distance increases at constant radiation levels.

    A typical Wi-Fi home router using 802.11b or 802.11g with a stock antenna might have a range of 32 m (120 ft) indoors and 95 m (300 ft) outdoors.

The new IEEE 802.11n however, can exceed that range by more than double.[citation needed] Range also varies with frequency band. Wi-Fi in the 2.4 GHz frequency block has slightly better range than Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz frequency block.

Outdoor range with improved (directional) antennas can be several kilometers or more with line-of-sight.

  • I'm pretty sure you can get a router with large WiFi range. Ask your local Future Shop or Best Buy.

Just get router that can reach further distances. I know NETGEAR has a few far ranged ones. For one of them, I can walk across the street from my house and still get a signal on my ipod touch.

  • I believe the farthest reaching linksys router is the WRT54GX4, check it out. And with some tinkering you can boost your current router with third party firmware, it can also allow you to connect several routers together to piggy back off one another.

u need to use 3rd party router firmware. but don't xpact some magick.it'll boost 20% range. google it i m sure u'll get one that is compatable with u r wi-fi
