Help with an ebook website? Please help!?

Question

I found a site for free ebooks, free-ebooks(.)net, but I want to know if it's safe. Is it going to hurt and/or make my computer slow? Does it have viruses?
You don't need to go into detail, I just want to know: Is it okay to download book(s)?
If not, any other sites that are: FREE, SAFE, WILL NOT HARM MY COMPUTER?
Better yet, are there any that you don't have to register on the website? Or even if there's a place I could read/listen to a book ONLINE?

http://www.gutenberg.org (if you use only one e-book site, this is the one - it has over 28,000 free e-books with no registering needed)

These are mainly for older books, published before 1923. Newer books are under copyright protection, so you will have a much harder time finding free e-book versions.
