Smoke detectors going off in the middle of the night?
Okay. We live in a brand new house. No one lived there before us. The smoke dectectors are brand new. All of them have new batteries in them.
Every so often in the middle of the night- all of the detectors will go off at random times. It scares the CRAP out of us and we check every room to make sure everything is okay. Which it is- no sign of anything.
Does anyone else have problems with this? Our apartment before this we had one and it never went off.
I am starting to think it's my dad who died last year messing with us. Whatever the reason is- it freaks all of us out and wakes the baby up!
It happened this morning at 2am!

They are 'hard wired' and have batteries for back-up, in case of power failure.
So, they are all connected. When one goes off, they all go off.
You either have:
a. a defective one
b. dust is getting into one of them because of an exhaust fan or other device is stirring up the air around it.
If you have a defective one, here's what you (or your mother) can do-
Next time they go off, take one down and disconnect it from the power source (It's a three-wire plug in.).
If the alarm stops, THAT is the defective one, throw it away and replace it.
If the alarm continues, re-connect that one and try the next one.
Continue this until you find the bad one.
*I've had to go through this process twice. Both times it was the middle of the night. \o/

I had that same exact thing happen to me in my apartment last year: the smoke detectors would go off full blast in the middle of the night. After about 3 nights of this I called maintenance and the problem was that all the smoke detectors were wired together and the battery in one was wired wrong so it caused them all to go off, and it just happened to be a really bad time. The maintenance guy said sometimes those things can go off by other things like carbon monoxide, spiders/spider webs, or even dust. If you change the batteries and still having the problem, you should call the fire dept. to come check for CO.

That happened at a previous apartment me and my fiance lived in. The landlord came over to check the smoke detectors were working properly shortly after we moved in. He took the detector off the wall, took the battery out, and all of a sudden the thing started beeping and wouldnt stop. It was really weird. He had to break the thing apart to get it to stop and then said, "Yep I guess its time for a new one." The new one was super sensitive and would go off every time we cooked something even if there was no smoke that you could see.

Our detectors are hard wired in our house, and have batteries for back up. The one in our bedroom kept going off too. After changing the batteries twice we just gave up and replaced the whole thing. It has not gone off since.
Why is it always in the middle of the night? =)
Are you sure the batteries are all new? Did you guys change them, or are you just assuming since the house is new that they are? Other wise I'd say it sounds like you got a bad set of detectors.

Ahhh, what a pain! We have never had issues with smoke alarms but the ADT alarm system in our house has had many issues. When the guy was installing it, the fire department showed up!
