Are people blind to suffering?
To what extent do many Western citizens not care about the suffering that their lifestyles cause. To what extent are they more than happy to put up with human rights abuses and genocide as long as they keep getting cheap consumables?
One death is a tragedy one million is a statistic.
Thats just it Eric P. I don't think there is a soultion :(
Born and bred UK my point is at the end of the day people could do more to help others but they don't why? When as you say it is as simple as supporting a charity or not buying a product made in a sweatshop.
All that it takes for evil to prevail is for a few good men to do nothing. The majority of people everywhere are good men yet they do not act so evil prevails.

Of course we care, but death only really affects us when we see it first hand. If every death stuck in our minds we'd all be depressed. I think most of us know what is happening around the world but choose to ignore it. Realistically there is very little we can do.

Let me address this:Anything that goes wrong around the world today is immediately blamed on the western world, whether they are involved or even know about it, is not considered.
Why have you sought to blaming the west for your own civil issues. If a small riot breaks out in any ones hometown its the west. A car blows up, the west are behind it.
Yet the west don't know but does who know and are able and are doing their best: Red Cross, Amnesty, etc (god bless them all) though they don't have to.
You for instance where is your homeland. You will find that in many third world countries the difference between the rich and the poor is longer than the Great Wall and the rich whom you may call my 'people', look down on the poor whom you again may call my 'people'. And if you are within the poor you yourself and family are oppressed by the rich yet you won't want to address that but readily blame the west that gives you a job, a free health service, job centres, buses and trains.
In short before people set out to be mind controlled by those who have no visions of a better world. 'Let every man and woman alike judge their own souls'.
At first the evil was the west and not a few good men.
Why do these countries that that would like to provoke the west into war not try the same for other nations apart from uk and usa.

I am not blind, I have travelled in the likes of China and seen villagers working 6 1/2 day weeks for very little money. Yet however many work there are millions more wanting the opportunity. They do so because it is better than what they had before, and better than working in the fields.
Our lifestyle has been achieved by the sufferings of our Forefathers. We had wars, famines, deaths and sweatshops. Through all of this we evolved to where we are now. The poorer countries are going through what we did 200 years ago and will achieve what we have a lot quicker because they unlike us have a market, the West, to sell their goods to and to learn from the mistakes we made.
Nobody helped us, and when these Countries get to where we are now do you think they will be reciprocal. If you think so think again. Look at protectionist China now and Japan before that.

Some people are blind through choice, What the eye doesn't see, the guilt can't seep in.
