just what the heck does "state minimum" price mean. re:alcohol in ohio?
i shop at several different stores all of which state that they sell beer, cigarettes, etc. at "state minimum" prices. however none of their prices are the same. does anyone know how to find the "state minimum" price list?
ps: please don't preach to me about the evils of smoking and drinking

You can try here, though I'm not really certain what I'm looking for. If you don't see it as an option, call them.

Ok, go to the top of the page, and use the drop down for LIQUOR CONTROL, and then select the Liquor Laws and Rules, Admin code 4301. When you get to the page, scroll down til you see "minimum markup for beer" and see if that's what you're asking about.
If it is, it's a "not less than" thing, which means they can charge more, just not less than a certain amount....which may be why they're all different.

It's the cost plus the state tax plus the profit they want to make. (IOW, to make that profit, the state won't allow them to sell for less, because you have to pay the full tax.)
It's advertising hype. EVERYONE sells at the lowest price allowed by law (even if there's no law governing the item). (The minimum price allowed by law on, say cigarettes, is state tax plus federal tax. Of course that would mean selling at a loss, but that's really the lowest price allowed by law.)
