Gaining muscle tone while losing weight?

Hello everybody,

I have been dieting and exercising (6 days a week) since early June. At 5,6 inches, I started at 183 and want to get down to around 155. In a bit over a month (4.5 weeks), I have lost 14 pounds (I'm currently at 169). My exercise consists of HIIT on an elliptical machine for a combined 50 minutes a day. I've been keeping my calories between 1100-1500 with few exceptions.

I'm thinking about adding in some weight training to tone my muscles while I'm losing weight, though I've heard one shouldn't always mix weight training and cardio/weightloss training (you need to have a negative calorie count at the end of the day to lose weight, while you need to eat more to gain muscle).

I'm not trying to gain muscle, just tone up my chest, arms, and legs. Anyone have any advice how many reps/sets and what exercises I should be doing to continue losing weight while incorporating weights with my normal cardio exercise?

Thanks

Just so you know, as you start toning muscles, you will gain weight because muscle weighs more than fat. The scale is not always right - ie. I weight 185lbs and have 6% body fat.

In any case, to tone muscles, you need to do more repetitions at a lighter weight. I honestly hate doing a confined number of repetitions and it is my most sincere belief that exercise should be more in time intervals rather than repetitions.

Try doing classic weight training in intervals of 1min.

    ie.

    1min military press (not stopping)

    1min pushups

    1min australian pullups

Do each of these one after the other (no rest) and repeat 3times.

    For legs, I recommend Plyometrics

Jumping lunges, Jumping Squats, Burpies, 8count body builders (youtube them). Try doing 1min of each back to back no rest :) If you are struggling too much, try doing 30 seconds at first, the 45 and work up to a minute.

I would also do Heart Rate training, try to consistently maintain your BPM at a high rate by doing intense exercises for your entire body. Your heart should be racing constantly like it does when you do plyometrics.

    Exercise schedule:

    Try this:

    M: Cardio, Upper

    T: Cardio

    W: Cardio, Lower

    Th: Cardio

    F: Cardio, Heart Rate Training

    S: Cardio

    Su: Rest

This routine is good to tone muscles rather than to gain mass. A good idea is to change up the exercises every time, so you do not get used to the exercises. If you body adapts to the exercises, you will not get the same benefit from them as before and you may limit your improvement later on. Try and REALLY tire yourself out each time and keep to the motto:

For your workout regimen, cardio is a good idea, but building muscle with weightlifting is better. Using the muscle does at least two things: you deplete the sugar the muscle is storing and you tear the muscle fibers.

This means that your body needs to recover in two ways: it needs to restore the expended glucose, and it needs to fix the muscle, making it bigger, better and stronger this time.

So not only are you doing the depletion work of cardio, you are also making sure your body is burning more calories at rest throughout the rest of your recovery period, which is at least for the rest of the day into the next.
