How long do premature babies usually spend in intensive care?
My baby daughter, Sapphire, was born on Saturday, just wondering when she may be allowed out. I have only been able to see her about 8 times.
I was 7 1/2 months pregnant. Sapphire needed a ventilator(?) for the first few hours, and after that she had emergency surgery on her right knee.
I haven't been able to see Sapphire too much because she has been in and out of the opperating theater, and I have been in and out of various examination rooms, as I have some kind of growth in my belly which may have had an influence on the way Sapphire's right knee has developed, and her premature birth. I wasn't aware of the growth before Sapphire was born, I thought it was just pregnancy pains, but it has got much worse since I had Sapphire and most of the time I have been in too much pain to physically get out of bed to go and see Sapphire in intensive care. It will be much easier when she is out of there and can come into my ward with me, as I won't have to go and see her, but we're not at that stage yet. I found out this evening that Saph cannot come out of intensive care until they are certain that the growth in my belly has not affected her in any way, other than her knee, which they already know about.

Hey, my neice was born 3 months early at 28 weeks gestation and she was in hospital for 3 months, close to her due date.
It depends on how the baby progresses and any other problems that they might have.
My son was born at 37 weeks, which isnt really classed as premmie but he had a chest infection and was in scu for 4 days then came up to the ward with me for another 3 days before we were allowed to take him home. My heart truly goes out to you because I know the emotional distress you feel when you are seperated from your baby. It's a horrible feeling, even when you do go to the scu you sometimes feel useless anyway but once your fit enough the nurses will let you do her cares, which is just changing her nappy and stuff but it makes you feel like your doing something.
In a few months it will all be a memory so just stay strong and congrats and best of luck to you and baby sapphire xx

didn't u ever put eggs into incubators in the 3rd grade? mine came out a rooster instead of a hen. they are called incubators. And the answer is: until the baby can breathe on it's own. the baby doesn't have to weigh so many lbs if that's what you mean. Doctors would prefer over 2 lbs. See, many women have multiple births were their babies come out to only about 15 ounces a piece. That's not even a pound!!! I knew a woman who took fertility pills and had 6 daughters all born a pound and a half. this woman was my friend and she died on delivery table. But, these 6 daughters now are very healthy women who are 20 yrs of age!!!! Amazing, huh? Fertility pills can be so dangerous though; can't they? I mean, my girlfriend died from too much pain and anesthesia.

How premature was she? My sister's daughter was a 26 weeker and stayed for 13 weeks, so she got out 1 wk before her actual due date. She was born 1 lb 13 oz she was a micro-preemie and so small. Once she is able for normal visits you need to spend as much time there as possible. Be the one to feed the baby and give her baths because with the nurses there, you'll be more confident and you'll be ready when she goes home. Good luck to you and your little one!

Afternoon,
If Sapphire was premature, they normally keep her in until her due date. My Son was four weeks early and as a rule I was told he would be allowed home in a month, they were right.
You have rights as her parents you should be allowed to go and see her in the mornings & evenings, not sure about lunch times.
I made sure I was there for my Sons morning feeds and evening kiss, cuddle and story (me telling him things, you know what I mean. I am sure you are telling Sapphire the same things)
But if you can't get to see her due to other family commitments then don't beat yourself up, save the energy for when she comes home.

I would say that its on a case by case bases as it depends on sooo many factors, babies health, weight, well being etc.
The only time I experienced this was when my friend gave birth prematurely to twins; they weighed only 3lb and 2.5lb but were otherwise healthy.
They remained in and incubator on a feed/drip for 8 weeks until they were able to be released to go home weighing in at an impressive 7.5/8.9lbs.

it depends on how early, small, under developed the little baby is, and if it has anyother problems that she may need an operation for. But just so you have a fair idea its usally around the time of thier real due date.eg. if she was 2months early she will be in hospital for 2months.. but thats just an average, if you little girl is in for longer then dont worry shes developing at her own pace.
i hope you and your little girl the best of look, all the best michelle♥

It all depends on the baby. My daughter was born two months premature and she was in the NICU for four weeks. There is no set limit, it depends on how well your baby does, and if there are any medical problems that has to be overcame first. Good luck with your baby, I know it is tough to have her in the NICU, but she will be fine :)

My nephew was born at 27 weeks and he spent about 3 months in the NICU before he was allowed to go home. He had breathing problems though so it made his stay alot longer cause they had to get his apnea under control before he could go home cause he stopped breathing very frequently.
Good Luck.

I didn't have a premature baby but the rule of thumb I have heard is the baby is expected to be in the hospital till their original due date. It seems odd though that you can't spend more time with your baby.
