What is your opinion of going gluten- and casein-free to deal with autism?

From what I can tell there's nothing more than anecdotal evidence that a gluten- and casein-free diet actually helps relieve the symptoms of autism. Studies seem to be split. I'm asking because I am considering putting myself (as an adult) on a gluten- and casein-free diet to see if it relieves any of my symptoms. I'm already off casein due to allergies, so not a big loss there.

So: can anyone tell me if there's really any value in the diets?

Does it help for extremely high-functioning individuals?

Update:

My main reason coming here for advice is that going off gluten isn't cool, and the standard 3 weeks apparently isn't enough for behavioural symptoms, so I don't want to do it without a reason. I agree, no wheat (or oats, or rye, or barley, or products which contain barley or wheat malt, like beer) won't be fun.

From what I've heard, most families notice some changes in the first few weeks, so it's definitely worth trying. If you're on twitter, I recommend you follow @autismfamily and send them your query.

nicely I havent accomplished it different than for a 300 and sixty 5 days as a teenager whilst they suspected I had celiac ailment. a chum of mine has an autistic 4 y previous and he has been in gluten and dairy unfastened weight loss plan for the reason that he become 2. ( he become clinically determined at around 18 mos as very heavily autistic, very not on time in each area and given threat of him in no way speaking etc) He have been given plenty intervention courses, his mom is astonishing and dedicated to him and that they placed him in gluten dairy unfastened weight loss plan. he's now probably 'favourite' 4 y previous. He talks and interacts with human beings like youngsters with out autism do, hes little bit on the shy area yet he has acquaintances and he has incredibly made dazzling progression. I dont understand precisely what they consume ( or he eats) yet easily its all wheat it incredibly is governed out, total wheat, bleached wheat something like that, incredient lists in no way say gluten, they checklist wheats. it ought to assert gluten unfastened on the label meaning that nicely, its gluten ( wheat) unfastened. There are some particular flours, truffles, meals that are gluten unfastened and particular they're little bit extra costly ( and lot much less tasty) yet you do what you ought to do. It isn't smart to basically decrease some off.. do all of it or under no circumstances. There are cereals and crackers etc that are gluten unfastened, end result and vegetables, potatoes, rice, egg noodles meat..etc.. particular its harder yet once you wanna provide it a attempt, do. I even have heard that for the period of many circumstances it does strengthen the habit of the youngster.
