Christians: What did Jesus's death actually achieve?

I know they say he died to "save us from our sins", but people still sin, and according to the Bible, they still go to hell for it. What did it actually do? Who did he save?

Update:

Forgot to add: I'm an atheist, just trying to understand the myth better.

@Chris: how is this different to before Jesus was around?

He did not die to SAVE US FROM OUR SINS. He died to save us from PAYING for our sins, which payment is required in the form of the death penalty.

Himself. When Jesus died apparently he got promoted to King in the heavens, being only second to God. So he didn't just die to help others, he died to get ahead in life.

And this is a good question because people do still sin and they still have to ask for forgiveness of those sins even though Jesus supposedly died for ALL, not some, but all of mankind's sins. Yet not everyone will gain salvation which makes no sense to me. So the Bible is lying when it says Jesus gave his life for the world, when in fact he gave it for a select few.

Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection obtained for the entire world, the eternal forgiveness of sin! Chris is a little bit off. People can't go to hell for sin because Jesus obtain eternal forgiveness[ redemption ] for the sins of the world!

For a person to be saved, he must call on the name of Jesus, or confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead! Everyone's sins are forgiven or you could not come before God and confess your sins because you would burn up because of the sins themselves!

Just for your enjoyment, a myth is a female moth!

Wow, that's the very question I have been asking for the longest and can't seem to get a straight answer about. I think Christians just can't see that thier religon is one be contradiction. If Jesus saved us all from our sins we are "safe" right. But no, Christians often say we have to "believe" or "accept" that we are saved. Then that means that non-believers are still in the same position they were before the crucifixion. Did Jesus come to save the believers? Before Jesus there were those who went to heaven, and others who went to hell...seems nothings changed....I'm as baffeled as you!

Paul says he had a imaginitive and prescient. i will say I certainly have a imaginitive and prescient, am i able to be further to the Bible? I say this because of the fact once you study the "Pauline doctrine", that's specifically paganism, and the training of Jesus, the perspectives and teachings conflict. i've got faith Paul replaced into royalty, and to maintain people below administration, he taught doctrine purposed to accomplish that. Paul's teachings have been of our actual nature and existence. Jesus's teachings have been that we are to no longer be of this international. in comparison to, love or settle for the fabric international as being actual, given it somewhat is the deception.

He canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.

And having disarmed the powers and Church authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules:

"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"?

These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

The way I see it Jesus heals others, others follow Jesus the king (being the fool that he is) wants him dead cause there is a greater powere out there then what people want to believe. It's different cause he was the official sacrafice. Before him they would have to give a sacrafice.

It gave us a choose. Now we can go to Heaven if we choose to follow HIM.

    Image this...

You are on a road and you come up to a Y. On the right side, you can see a beautiful garden with lots of food, and a large mansion, the left side goes up and into an erupting volcano, so you do not want to go there, but the right side is barricaded, so you have no choose.

JESUS has the key to a door in the barricade, so HE can let you in, but you have to ask HIM, HE will not force you.

Concerning sin and its effect, the Bible says: “Through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned.” (Romans 5:12) The Scriptures also state: “The wages sin pays is death.” (Romans 6:23)

What happens to the spirit when a person dies? Psalm 146:4 says: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish.” When a person dies, his impersonal spirit does not go on existing in another realm as a spirit creature. It “returns to the true God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7) This means that any hope of future life for that person now rests entirely with God.

When pronouncing sentence upon Adam, Jehovah stated: “Dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19)

The condition of the dead is made clear at Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, where we read: “The dead know nothing . . . In the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”

What, then, is hell? Examining what happened to Jesus after he died helps to answer that question. The Bible writer Luke recounts: “Neither was [Jesus] forsaken in Hades [hell, King James Version] nor did his flesh see corruption.” (Acts 2:31) Where was the hell to which even Jesus went? The apostle Paul wrote: “I handed on to you . . . that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, yes, that he has been raised up the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3, 4) So Jesus was in hell, the grave, but he was not abandoned there, for he was raised up, or resurrected.

So that shows us that hell doesn't exist. Regarding the ransom sacrafice and it's purpose:

Ephesians 1:7- By means of him we have the release by ransom through the blood of that one, yes, the forgiveness of [our] trespasses, according to the riches of his undeserved kindness

9 Since a perfect human life was lost, no imperfect human life could ever buy it back. (Psalm 49:7, 8) What was needed was a ransom equal in value to what was lost. This is in harmony with the principle of perfect justice found in God’s Word, which says: “Soul will be for soul.” (Deuteronomy 19:21) So, what would cover the value of the perfect human soul, or life, that Adam lost? Another perfect human life was the “corresponding ransom” that was required.—1 Timothy 2:6.

    The benefits are:

The forgiveness of sins. Because of inherited imperfection, we have a real struggle to do what is right. All of us sin either in word or in deed. But by means of Jesus’ ransom sacrifice, we can receive “the forgiveness of our sins.” (Colossians 1:13, 14) To gain that forgiveness, however, we must be truly repentant. We must also humbly appeal to Jehovah, asking his forgiveness on the basis of our faith in the ransom sacrifice of his Son.—1 John 1:8, 9.

16 A clean conscience before God. A guilty conscience can easily lead to hopelessness and make us feel worthless. Through the forgiveness made possible by the ransom, though, Jehovah kindly enables us to worship him with a clean conscience despite our imperfection. (Hebrews 9:13, 14) This makes it possible for us to have freeness of speech with Jehovah. Therefore, we can freely approach him in prayer. (Hebrews 4:14-16) Maintaining a clean conscience gives peace of mind, promotes self-respect, and contributes to happiness.

17 The hope of everlasting life on a paradise earth. “The wages sin pays is death,” says Romans 6:23. The same verse adds: “But the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.” In Chapter 3 of this book, we discussed the blessings of the coming earthly Paradise. (Revelation 21:3, 4) All those future blessings, including life everlasting in perfect health, are made possible because Jesus died for us. To receive those blessings, we need to show that we appreciate the gift of the ransom.
