There are many good introductory books on Buddhism. I usually recommend:

"It's Easier Than You Think" by Sylvia Boorstein

This short book sets out the basics of Buddhism with warmth, wit, and wisdom. It's free of jargon and sectarian bias - which makes it easily accessible to anyone.

"Buddhism for Dummies"

Despite the goofy title, this book does an excellent job of summarizing the basics of Buddhism and describing the diversity of the Buddhist world. Again, it's free of sectarian bias, which I think is important for someone new to Buddhism.
