Detox from Politics / Religion?

How does anyone recommend recommend "detoxing" from political science and related reading. In researching matters, it seems there is a point of diminishing return, reading / knowing - a little too much, and find that although being reasonably well informed about a few subject matters, that it has VERY little value to me objectively.

In my personal case, being concerned about the direction of the nation after 9/11, and perhaps over-familiar with the inner workings of the apparatus in the previous administration.

Worse, that to my mind, is that it seems very much the case that like Frankenstein's monster - once animated, we find that the real monstrosity is in equal parts the creation and the creator.

There are three factors which really brought this question to a head and why I'm asking this question.

1. Ideological impairment, where people parrot various talking points without having the slightest clue they are being spoon-fed.

2. Intolerance - here again spoon-feeding radicalism whether religious or racial intolerance it seems all pretty much not a productive effort to try to illuminate against.

3. Institutional ignorance - the other thing that just is a "kick in the cajones" , is almost a righteous indignation of many contributors around the concept of BECOMING educated on the matters that are of importance.

While certainly it's possible to enjoy a good discussion and a debate on matters but hearing my own echo is as unsatisfactory as is the infantilism and ignorance is disheartening - to say the least.

As many here would likely not want to admit themselves, there are some contributors - I'd like to think, myself included, who make some small emotional investment in their writing, which is the "fix" - after all.

I certainly understand that asking this question IN the forum could be considered right up there with going to a Vegas seeking ideas on how to stop gambling, but perhaps the answers will be useful for more than just myself.

So I'll ask., how has anyone else stepped away from this or other forums or any other similar "time-sink" and just disconnect?

Update:

Thanks guys I appreciate the answers!

    At night I use Archie comics. During the day, when I'm lucky, I get to drive someplace an hour or two away to work by myself. Then I take some problem I've been considering and examine any new ways of dealing with it. By problem I'm referring to something related to aircraft design or how to build a floating city economically or a simple cheap way to build a solar water still. You get the idea.

    Well now Mark... usually a colon cleanse or a laxative is indicated in such cases. But unfortunately the stubborn problem keeps returning.

    God grant me the serenity

    To accept the things I cannot change;

    Courage to change the things I can;

    And wisdom to know the difference.
