Boxer. 1 yr. Need help. Weight.?

He has been to the vet, they told us to feed him cat food, but dogs ARE NOT suppose to eat cat food. They also told us to feed him more and he wont eat more than two bowls. He doesn't have worms either he has been checked.

Update:

I have a one year 2 month and 11 day old boxer. We bought him from some people who weren't so good to him. When I got him he was emaciated and my vet gave us so much high cal product to get him Goodd puppy weight. Now the dog, at the age of one is doing good and has grow into his body. He's roughly 60 lbs. My problem is we can't keep weight in his hip area. The back of our dog food bag says for a dog under 75 lbs he should have 4-7.5 cups of dog food a day. His bowl holds 4 cups. He gets 2 full bowls a day. We were buying him beniful, however he suddenly stopped eating him. He wouldn't even sniff it. We then bought him a cheap bag from kroger. He has eaten that like crazy today. Ha's had 3 full bowls already.

My main question, is there any way to put weight on him and keep it on his that anyone knows of.

He lives with my boyfriend, and when he was with me he wouldn't eat diamond dog food at all either.

He goes outside most of the day and only comes in for a drink. He loves it outside. He comes in at night and sleeps in his own bed in the room.

I think he runs the weight off because he constantly plays.

We have had the police out though due to him being thin in the hip area and the neighbor calls and says he's agressive even though little neighbor kids come play with him every day.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to keep his weight?

For weight gain and then for maintaining the weight ..

    5 pounds hamburger

    5 ounces oatmeal

    3 eggs

    5 ounces wheat germ

    5 ounces molasses

mix together, make meatballs ,,, freeze ... defrost 2 meatballs a day and feed to your dog

    should put the weight on

You could also mix in cottage cheese, scrambled or boiled egg into his food alternating daily

First, get him on a good quality dog food. Yes, you are correct, DOG food. The reason is that the nutrients are all the wrong levels in cat food. I would recommend Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul because it is one of the top three dog foods (deemed so by an independent dog food journal) and is one of the cheapest of the premium brands. Make sure to buy puppy food because that has higher levels of protein, fat, and nutrients that will help him put on some weight. Since he isn't very keen on eating, bribe him by adding in some wet food. For this I recommend Merrick cans as they have lots of gravy to slather over the food, is very healthy, and you can actually SEE the ingredients (exp. if it says it has peas you can see whole peas in there). If you want to get Merrick dry puppy food, it is designed to make gravy when you add water so that would only be one step for you.

To help put on weight feed throughout the day and supplement their diet with fun, healthy "people" food like chicken, ground beef, eggs...etc. I usually keep my dogs in the kitchen with me while I'm cooking and as I'm preparing food I throw down some for them like the fat I cut off raw chicken, the tops of tomatoes, or carrot peels. There is something called "nutrical" that you can add to his food. It's a high-calorie paste full of nutrients designed to put weight on dogs.

I have a dog that was emaciated when we first got him. He is a Pit and like Boxers they have high metabolisms. Keep in mind that your dog will probably never be heavy and will most likely always look thin. You can see my Pits ribs just a tad too much for my taste but the vet says that as long as he's eating and is parasite free there isn't much to worry about- just don't let him lose any more weight!!

Anyway, my recommendation is to do as I said above (you NEED to get him on a high quality food like those I mentioned or you're just feeding him stuff he can't digest so he's not going to get better) and to get a second opinion from another veterinarian.
