What clinics can you "force" an alcoholic to go to?
My friend is discussing a severe drinking problem his mother has with me. He's worried about her and he wants to help her, but dealing with an alcoholic mother myself I know that it's virtually impossible to stop an alcoholic without professional help. What are some programs or places she can be signed up to without her volunteering?

You can always go to the courts and have an Order of Protective Custody filed. This will allow mental health authorities to check her into a mental health facility and if there is a bed open- a drug rehab center. She must be shown to be a danger to herself or others prior to a judge granting the motion for the order.
Secondly, remember the old axiom "You can lead a horse to water but you can not make them drink..." If you are successful in getting her into a facility, and that is a big "IF" you have to be aware of the fact that she will not change her behavior unless she wants to change it. Most addicts and alcoholics will not willingly change their behavior unless they come close to death or something scares them enough to even admit that they have a problem.
Good Luck... you might try ALANON support groups to help cope.
