Public Relations is the use of media, print and technology to make information known to the public or a certain targeted demographic. A PR professional can be responsible for anything from media relations, to press releases, to special event coordination, to strategic counsel (i.e. brand message development or product positioning).

The main goal of public relations to is to serve as a positive representative for the person, brand, company, or product you want to promote. A PR person is much more than just a cheerleader for the client though; oftentimes, there are situations that may require you to manage issues that if not dealt with properly, can be disastrous.

A friend of mine recently published his book. He wants me to be his PR person. I know that means public relations but I have no idea what I am meant to do or where to even start. Please help!

It can be simple advertising, promotions, marketing. Set up an event that the friend can show off his book, talk with a local book store to see if they would put up a poster that you create.
