How lame would a Harry Potter themed wedding be?
How lame would a Harry Potter themed wedding be? To say I am a huge fan is an understatement. I've practically lived and breathed Harry Potter for 10 years now. I love it.
I've been thinking lately about having Hogwarts colors, parchment, castle-themed objects, etc.
How lame would this be? And does anyone have any other ideas for a Harry Potter wedding?
What about four long tables and a "staff" table at the reception hall. You could decorate each of the tables with the colors of a respective House and do the head table in a combination of colors.
I doubt I could get the future hubby to agree, but it would still be awesome.
I wouldn't make it so much "theme" wedding as I would just attempt to incorporate something of the most beautiful and elegant parts of the stories - the castle, pillars, colors, quills and parchment, etc.
Obviously none of you have read the books. Harry Potter is certainly no more juvenile than anything else. It's a touching story that love conquers all.
And btw, I see no reason why anyone should have to be rude about this. I'm not suggesting anyone dress up in robes with a scar on their head. I'm suggesting using the house colors and making the reception have an "old" world castle feel.
Haha I could never get him to agree to this, but I still think it would be a fun idea. I don't see it as being juvenile at all. Why not incorporate something you love and enjoy into your wedding? People do it all the time.

I think if you do it in subtle ways it will be fine...and classy. For example, your center pieces at each table could be a white 4" wide diameter candle...to represent the candles that float in the dining hall. And the flowers that your bridesmaids carry can be maroon and gold mums to represent the Griffyndor House colors. And instead of having table numbers, the tables can be named after various Harry Potter characters...with the head table being named Harry Potter. Perhaps your wedding invitation could look like normal wedding invitations, but have as part of the design bamboo shoots. You would know that the bamboo shoots are really gillyweed. Maybe the table cloth for the gift table could be silver lame (sp) fabric, to represent the invisibility cloak. Maybe the table placement card holder could be a castle....they sell those at Hobby Lobby. As your wedding favors, instead of wrapping jordan almonds in tulle, you could wrap in tulle some jelly belly jelly beans...for every flavor beans. One of the tiers of your wedding cake could be chocolate cake...since chocolate is what you eat to feel better after a dementor attack.
The escort cards (the cards that tell people where to sit) could be a thick paper that looks about the same size as a trading card. The reverse side would be your a formal photo of the two of you while the other side would have the guest's name and their seating asignment. Perhaps you could have 4 or 5 different photos...so there is a variety of "trading cards." LOL If you have a color printer at home, you can easily do this yourself. If you go to Staples or Office Max, you'll probably find some Avery labels that are around that same size anyway. If you have Kodak Easy Share software, you could tell it to print on 8.5 x 11 paper with 12 photos with borders per page...or something like that. And if you know someone who can write in caligraphy, then it will have that fountain pen look and feel to the writing.
I would incorporate the Harry Potter stuff in ways that are subtle and natural elements in a wedding. So, for your guests, it looks like normal wedding stuff, but you know HP is there. Your guests see bridesmaids carrying a boquet flowers. You see the Griffyndor house colors in those flowers. Your guests see cake. You see that as well as the chocolate. You don't even have to tell people what you used as your inspiration. It is enough that you know they are there.
I'd stay away from the sorting hat, witches hat, dementors, magic wands, thestrals, Voldemort, Moody's eyeball, or the firebolt 3000, etc. By incorporating really obvious Harry Potter stuff, you turn it into a 5 year old's birthday party. You want to be the center of attention instead of your theme being the center of attention.

I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but I don't think it's lame at all. If this is what you're into, then you should totally do it. There will always be nay-sayers, no matter what theme you pick - might as well pick something that is meaningful to you.
I disagree with people who say it's "juvenile"; just because it is something that appeals to kids doesn't make it lame or juvenile or stupid. Plenty of adults love Harry Potter and find the story captivating. Don't let snobby people get to you; I bet most of these people who are so critical of Harry Potter haven't even read a book (any book) in years.
P.S. Sorry, I haven't ready Harry Potter myself, so I can't offer any ideas on what to include in your wedding. But from what I've seen and heard, the book itself is a rich source of inspiration for all kinds of creative ideas.

Well, I'd be all in favor, but I'm extremely fond of the series - and my friends and loved ones are all very much aware of that, if not hardcore fans themselves. If your social circle isn't as supportive, I agree that you should keep it subtle if you do it at all: maybe instead of using all the house colors, pick the one that you like best and use that for your decorating scheme. You could also have some Hogsmeade sweets, like "every flavor beans" (only the good-tasting varieties, obviously). But people do Disney weddings all the time, so why not go for it?

Awwww! What a sweet idea!!! And good ideas with the quills and parchment! Everything about Hogwarts is magical and elegant, so why the hell not! Of course it's not juvenile! It's not just for children. It's for adults too! GO FOR IT! It's your wedding, do as you please! :)

I think it could be pulled off, you just have to make it a point to make sure nothing will alienate those of your guests who have not read Harry Potter-- believe it or not they exist! None of my grandparents have, and neither has my little sister. So some of the more Harry Potter specific elements might have to be subtle, but I think it could be pulled off. I know full grown women who are still such potter maniacs that this would really fit their personalities.

I don't think Harry Potter is juvenile at all. It's well written, well conceptualized, and beautifully carried out, in all seven books. Twilight, on the other hand... *shudder*
That said, you could carry out a HP-themed wedding without announcing it, if you think people would find it lame. The HP theme as you describe it is almost a fairy tale/castle wedding theme. You could use your favorite house's colors and maybe even decorate like the banquet hall in the movies. You could use similar foods. You don't need to do wands and a sorting hat or anything, but like you said, just incorporate the beauty of it. Nobody would scoff at a fairy taled-themed wedding.

If you can keep the balance and not make it too tacky then go for it! It sounds like so much fun- it'll defiantly be remembered!! Try not go overboard- just subtle Potter touches, a magical, castle feel and maybe funny touches- like drinking goblets, little broomsticks in cocktail glasses....oooh it could be brilliant!

I am personally not a fan of "theme" weddings in general.
That being said, I don't see why Harry Potter would be any more "lame" than any other interest/hobby a bride and groom might want to incorporate in their wedding.

I adore Harry Potter. I've been reading the books since I was in high school and that's coming up on 10 years!
I wouldn't have a themed wedding though. I just can't imagine looking at my wedding photos 20 years from now and thinking "What the hell was I thinking?"

I think it would be fun and lovely to have a Harry Potter wedding -- if you had literally had hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on doing it right. If you could get movie-set quality decorations and costumes and props, it would be ridiculously cool. But if you had to cut corners and use childrens' party favors, it would be unspeakably awful.
But if you could, wouldn't these cakes be fantastic?
